True, but poorly written Sep 29, 2009 I agree with the other reviews 100% when it comes to the views on Sheriff Arpaio and the abuse of power he has over not only Maricopa County, but all of Arizona. However, this book was very poorly written, full of typos, missed quotations, missed punctuation, and repetitive use of the same descriptive wording and phrases in every chapter. As I read this book from inside Tent City, I realized there was a better book out there. One that wasn't written yet. Her sentence was only ten days, and it was before the DUI arrest rate skyrocketed after the 2006 and 2008 DUI laws changed for the worse. I am currently serving 45 days in Tent City for a first-offense DUI. What I've witnessed in the 18 days I've been encarcerated is far more appalling than this woman endured in her entire 10 days combined. Drugs, strip searches, women nearly dying in their bunks of seizures and heat stroke because the guards fail to get to them in time, taking away our vending machine priveledges, even taking away our water supply for several days in a row in 120+ degree heat. There is a grave injustice and abuse of power here in Arizona. Innocent women thrust into a jail system side by side with repeat offenders, drug users and felons. This book didn't even scratch the surface as to what's been going on in Arpaio's Tent City the past four years. I've already begun writing my own tragic tale of events, and will pursue publication when it's done. The world needs to know what's really going on in Tent City from someone serving more than a measly ten days.

Tent City -- an appalling true story May 22, 2007 "Tent City" is an uncomfortable read that one doesn't want to miss. Do you remember when Freedom was a comforting word that made you feel proud and safe? To maintain a society based on Freedom meant taking pride in being a responsible, accountable, involved, aware, moral citizen. Read "Tent City" for a story that's a microcosm of what's being played out repeatedly on the global stage. This story -- based on one woman's experience multiplied many times over -- demonstrates how our Freedom is being railroaded by weak bullies who stroke each other's egos and bully those who aren't part of their good-ole-boy group. Nora's experience is appalling, and is the direct result of one Sheriff in Arizona who has repeatedly been re-elected. He makes a mockery of the very Freedoms he was elected to uphold. Read this book and feel outraged as well as warned. The precious Freedoms some of us love about our country are being distorted and abused by at least one Sheriff who wears pink underwear and thumbs his nose at the real meaning of justice...AND Freedom.

A Must Read for AZ residents, students, law students Aug 29, 2006 The public, not just here in Arizona, should read this book. Sheriff Joe is considered a "hero" by many, but I think, if they knew about the inhumane treatment that is going on here, they would have a different view. It is beautifully written and a very fast read. As a retired lawyer, it seems that what is going on in Tent City is a violation of the constitutional rights of everyone that is there as a prisoner, as well as those , who have had the unfortunate experience of having a "stay" there. PLEASE READ it. I am recommending it to anyone with whom I talk.
Cindy, Maricopa County, Arizona resident
