Gift for my mother-in-law Apr 08, 2010
By Katherine W. Cobb Since my mother-in-law grew up during the Depression, I purchased this book for her. She lives in Kansas. She absolutely raved about it and found it so much like her life. She couldn't put it down and had it read in less than 2 days and has been asking me when the follow-up book is coming out. Every time I talk to her, she still tells me how much she enjoyed Mr. Satterfield's book and can't wait for the next one.

authenticity of language Mar 05, 2010
By Mary S. Gould
"Mary Scott"
I love the way the writing was true to the times, and that the author's vocabulary really rang true for me. Now I know why my family said "white meat or dark meat" instead of "breast or thigh?". How funny!

Comments of a Contemporary Feb 13, 2010
By Norman Griffith The Story has many delightful reminders for those who know something of life on the farm in the South of the
20th Century. One gets frequent glimpses into the agricultural community and, especially, the distinct levels that existed in the so-called 'classless' society as a consequence of the disruptions of the Civil War. The Story reveals some of the drama and trauma of young people leaving the farm to make their way in the new life of towns and cities. There are sharp reminders of the perils of economic 'bubbles', the land boom of the Twenties in Florida followed by the Great Depression. Finally there are warm scenes of holiday reunions as the more adventuresome return to the familiarity and comfort of home.
