A USEABLE WORK OF ART May 19, 2007 When I was planning on having my first home built recently, I was lucky enough to be told by a friend about an amazingly gifted architect named David John Carnivale, from Staten Island, New York, and his incredible book, The Affordable House. Even at first glance it's obvious that you have a very useable work of art in your hands. The drawings are nothing short of incredible, and quickly take you back to a different time and place where homes were truly self expressions of artistic form and space. The layout of the book, the easy to read text and descriptions, the multitude of unique designs with incredible attention to detail, and the drawings which, unto themselves, could each be framed as exceptional artwork, unite to create a book that is a must have for anyone who is planning on building a very special private residence. I would personally recommend the book for the glory of the archtect's pen and ink renderings alone. Thank you, and well done Mr. Carnivale.
Revolutionary! May 15, 2007 I love the plans in "The Affordable House". The designs of architect David Carnivale offer a degree of grace and polish that is impossible to find in most contemporary houses. I am truely awed by the poise and correctness of these beautifully proportioned homes. And when one considers that these are indeed modest residences, this alchemy becomes twice as impressive!
The broad range of styles and periods represented in this book makes it a pleasure to study. The attention to detail in even the smallest cottage is amazing. And there is a focus on gracious living embodied in the thoughtful floor plans (entries with a sense of occassion, vestibules to enhance private spaces, beautifully rendered staircases ) that fulfills the promise of each charming facade. This, in the day of pretentious McMansion estetics hiding bland cookie-cutter interiors, with their hollow core doors, ill-conceived fireplaces and cottage cheese ceilings, makes the lovely homes in Mr. Carnivale's book revolutionary!
By the way, my favorite is design # 64. I love the tandem garages flanking the motorcourt.

Affordable homes with high quality design! Apr 15, 2006 I was amazed at the detailed designs of these modest and affordable homes. It took me back to an earlier era when people valued craftsmanship and detail. If you want a home plan that will make everyone sit up and take notice, I'd highly recommend one of the many affordable house plans from this book.
