This book is too short! I read it entirely in a few hours. I guess the fact that I did, says it all. Unlike Mr. Hanau's previous novel, "The Baby in the Bag", which I found to be schizophrenically funny, this story weaves together beautifully. The characters are well written and the dialogue pops. Mr. Hanau is a very visual writer and the descriptions of body movement, sight and sound along with dialogue, adds tremendously to the reader's enjoyment. The President, as well as the main character, Johnnie Dough are particularly good as are the little idiosyncratic behaviors in all the characters. The political strategy discussions that occur in the Oval office had me smiling and shaking my head with delight as I could very well imagine these occurring, implausible as they might be. Somehow, Mr. Hanau is able to make the ridiculous seem reasonable. Likewise, the situations and discussions that occur outside the Oval office seemed authentic. I also enjoyed how Mr. Hanau uses characters based on actual historical characters in order to use they're famous quotes to add to the humor. I was not too surprised by the ending as it is fore shadowed yet, none the less I was happily surprised by it's magnitude. This novel has a good buildup to the end and doesn't let the reader down. The characters seem to be based on current political leaders as the characterizations are lethal. And while I may not agree with Mr. Hanau's point of view, I highly recommend this book to anyone who shakes their head in disbelief at the current politics and wants a few good laughs.
