A fun and engaging distillation of the essentials.... May 28, 2007

Hobbs delivers! As a former Air Force instructor pilot with over 1900 hours of total flight time - including 100+ hours of combat over Afghanistan and Iraq, I don't hesitate to give this book 5 stars. The Anatomy of Problem-Solving is a powerful resource for anyone seeking to jump-start or enhance their problem-solving potential. -OP
Anatomy Lesson Aug 05, 2011
By Reginald Goodwin The Anatomy of Problem-Solving:
Problem Recognition/Problem Observation/Problem Analysis/Develop Solution/Validate Solution/Sustain Solution/Problem Evaluation
The Scientific Method:
Problem/Research/Hypothesis/Test Hypothesis/Data Analysis/Conclusion/Retest
The book has obvious overlaps with the Scientific Method with this unique exception: the author has taught it as a course at the college level, gleaned from his previous career in the US Navy, where there was no margin for error: lives were literally at stake.
The Scientific Method is usually taught as an activity the first week of any high school science course: biology, chemistry, human anatomy and physiology, and physics.
It is then promptly discarded, not talked about; you hope your kids remember the steps and you kind of get it when they really do (or don't). It is assumed known at the college level, with limited review if at all.
The Anatomy of Problem-Solving gives real-world examples that you walk through, each procedure step-by-step, building your expertise on this method that most Naval veterans swear by, heretofore unknown to the general public.
The contrast of this book and the Scientific Method is you are given a modus operandi that should give anyone the confidence needed of fixing anything, from an electrical circuit to a washing machine; a naval helicopter to a business model. It is that powerful!
In a globally competitive world, the United States is now faced as a country with competition in the sciences and business (often hand-in-hand) from Asia and Europe, a generation ago we helped rebuild after World War II. We can no longer assume ourselves always "number 1": China's economy will eclipse that of the US in 2016; as a region Asia is already producing more research and papers in science and engineering.
This is a needed course in college and a version (hopefully) taught in the nation's high schools along with tailored-to-student-learning-mode study skills. It would be a powerful combination to change the trajectory of our commonwealth for a brighter, prosperous future.

Excellent both at home and for a major manufacturing operation May 01, 2010
By L. Martinich Hobbs provides a great step-by-step approach to problem-solving, one that you can use when trying to solve an equipment problem at home or trying to get a manufacturing site back on line. His approach is down-to-earth and well rehearsed. One of the best features of this book is a spreadsheet to help you compare various approaches to a given problem. Another important aspect of this book is that it takes the various "people issues" into account, all to often overlooked by others. Excellent work and useful!
Problems Solved Jan 16, 2010
By Lashunder Y. Hobbs This book has helped me tremendously as a homemaker. With having three children there are always "Problems To Solve". I've personally used the steps to solve various problems around our home. I was able to successfully fix our dryer, it needed a new heating coil, which saved us about $400 or more. I also used the principles to setup a secured network and wireless printer for our home.
I'm so excited now I don't have to ask my wonderful husband for help I can do it myself. It's exciting to have a proven process anyone from novice to professional can use. The Anatomy Of Problem Solving has given me more confidence to take care of the things that come up in life unexpectantly.
If you truly use the steps you can and will be confident in your problem solving endeavors.
Excellent Book! I would highly recommend it for personal and professional use.

Great book for insight into Problem Solving in Teams. Feb 16, 2009
By Carol Schmidt A terrific book, injected with some humor which makes it a great read! The book takes you through some everyday life experiences/problems all the way to technical problems, along with the process and approach to enable successful problem solving. I personally enjoyed Tim's keen insight into Teams and the dynamics that go on within a team and the many different personalities that either make or break solving problems.
