5Hell Yes!  Jul 26, 2008

About the last thing most sane people ever want to see is a posse (is that the right word?) of Hells Angels filling up their rear view mirror. Five years ago or so, I saw two members of that organization sitting in the middle of New York City's Fifth Avenue just below 23rd Street. They sat surrounded by eight cops out of four cruisers and no one was moving. It was a stand-off or, rather, a sit-stand-off.

I had no idea what they'd done, though it certainly must have been serious. This was just the sort of street theater New Yorkers live/die for, so I joined the crowd and waited for whatever was supposed to explode to do its thing. That's when I overheard one cop call for additional backup--before attempting to handcuff the two on the ground!! I took that as a sign: if the NYPD labeled Hells Angels "Handle with Care," I should keep far to the right (preferably off the road and parked in a locked garage) any time even passing social interaction with any of its membership seems likely.

For that reason alone I have to admire Gary McKeehan and the insight he brings to his new novel, "THE ANGELS." McKeehan's thorough research and skill at writing are what I'd expect from an experienced journalist, but the way in which he tells his story--flourishing his prose with the perfect words--is what made this a fascinating read.

His novel strips away whatever romantic notions one may carry of the biker-gang lifestyle; for its practices inexorably destroy their practitioners ("rot away from the inside out")--taking many innocents and not-so-innocents along with them. Even children with candy are not spared.

Whether or not the protagonist, Richard Allard, is his creator's alter ego, his journey grabs you as real--make that journeys, for Allard/McKeehan covers a lot of ground. And wear sturdy shoes, because you won't want to miss a step, a twist, or a turn.

Brave and relentless, honorable and honest, Gary McKeehan brings to the world a provocative and insightful historical moment disguised as fiction. His style wraps itself around you, pulling you headlong into the story and he doesn't let up until it's over. A powerful and important read, it will make an amazing movie someday.
