The Autism Mom's Survival Guide

Learn simple, practical, and inexpensive techniques for surmounting the many day-to-day challenges facing the families of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders without demolishing your family budget. In a clear, no-nonsense style, the author provides effective (and cheap) tricks for organizing just about everything and making your home “sensory friendly.” She includes tips for getting your kids through the grocery store meltdown free, planning successful vacations, keeping your marriage strong, and lots more, all in a handy purse-sized and easily-referenced format. Since 2005, at least 14 children with autism have died as a result of wandering. A recent survey reveals an alarming 92% of children with autism wander. The National Autism Association’s FOUND Program provides county sheriff’s departments with Project Lifesaver equipment and tracking watches for children with ASD. A portion of the proceeds from each copy of this book sold on Amazon are being donated to NAA's FOUND Program.

3Specific book for specific children  Aug 19, 2010
By Naaga
This was a great book IF your child is younger(3-5),non-verbal, and whose main problem is tantrums. With our daughter being a very verbal,10 yr old, not potty trained child with ASD, this book did very little good for me.
ASD is very very broad, and each child is very very different. The struggles each mother goes through with her Autistic child are very unique to her.I found this book to be very focused on one type of ASD in its approach.
I also misread the thrust of the book. In reading the "first few pages" I assumed the majority of this book was going to be about some of the more emotional issues that a mother of a child with autism deals with, anger, guilt, frustration. There are a few pages devoted to this, and a few mentions here and there, but mostly this book could be called" Ways to make rearing a child with autism easier". There are many practical ideas on eating out ( if tantrums are a problem), school, etc.

I did not have a problem with this book in general....if the above description fits your child then this book could be a great help to you, it did not however fit my child and was virtually worthless to me.

( as a personal note I had a real problem with her suggesting that you "schedule sex" with your husband.....seriously?")

As the mother of an autistic child, coping books for the practical things are a dime a dozen. I was looking for a way to deal with some of the emotions that a mother of an autistic child might be dealing with. Ideas like "bring a list with you when you go shopping", and " if a waiter/waitress is really good with your child remember to tell the manager" was just not at all what I was looking for.

5One of those "I Wish I Had Known" Books!  Mar 28, 2009
By S. Amend
I wish this book had been there for me when I began my road as the parent of a child with ASD. There are so many practical bits of information that are learned over the years. Save yourself the years and buy this book. It offers so many ideas to make life easier and more enjoyable for all of us, reminding us of the remarkable gift we have been given in these children. It is a concise, easy read, perfect to pick up and reference whenever needed. I highly recommend it!

5An essential guide  Mar 15, 2009
By Serelda Elliot
This is a wonderful book and will be an essential tool to help families cope with the day-to-day challenges of raising an autistic child. Hemenway's down-to-earth style is entertaining and easy to read. Detailed information and practical suggestions about setting up your house, going to the store or out to dinner, doctor visits, social situations and even vacations, will help families learn to minimize the stress that can occur throughout a typical day with an autistic child. The author's warmth and deep love for her son will inspire other parents who may be struggling with the additional responsibilities involved in helping their children have the best experiences possible.

If you have an autistic child, buy this book! You won't regret it and I'll bet you'll recommend it to other parents as well.

5Essential tool for all parents of autistic children!  Mar 14, 2009
By J. V. Baldwin
There are many books out there on the autism spectrum, themselves creating a spectrum of controversy, politicism, witchhunt and rhetoric. Too many authors are so busy arguing about what may cause autism that they completely ignore the daily needs of people living autism.

What a refreshing work this is...whether you believe that autism is a genetic disease or the result of insult to the body by vaccination or other assaults on children's immune systems, you NEED this book. With gentle humor and common sense and great insight, Stephanie Hemenway offers you a way to just get through the day with your autistic child while making that day the best that your child can experience.

The book is eminently readable and even enjoyable while providing a literal field guide to living with autism, a life that, unfortunately, more and more parents are experiencing as autism rates soar. If it were twice the price, it'd be well worth it...this is a just a great little book. I highly recommend this guide...get it, you will not regret it!
