The Baby in the Bag: A Politically Incorrect Tale

"The Baby in the Bag", Madd Magazine on acid, is a humorous fictional tale that plays with political incorrectness, publicity at any cost, and the current state of affairs among the media and Hollywood elite. Join Parc Attola as he inadvertently insults the dwarfs of the world and laugh as they seek their revenge against him until Pacito Jones, the African-Mexican dwarf actor comes to his rescue. Read as Parc writes his tale of "The Baby in the Bag" and intrepid Detective Tommy Gun as Detective Gun tries to solve the mystery of the dead baby found in a back pack, in a high school girl's locker room. Bar flies, sexually confused teenagers, lisping bikers, self-centered cheerleaders, television and radio talk show hosts and over zealous agents all blend together to make this one funny and wild read!

1Absolute Garbage  Jul 14, 2009

The Baby in the Bag tries to sell itself as the result of putting South Park, Vonnegut and National Lampoon in a blender. If by that metaphor, the summary means that the result would be a shredded, muddled mess combining the worst of those inputs, then the review is somewhat accurate.

A more apt description is that the book steals location and character outlines from Carl Hiaasen without given them any of Hiaasen's depth and places them in a story with all the complexity, nuance and originality of an Archie comic or Mad Magazine parody.

I purchased this at the same time I bought Confederacy of Dunces. The only similarity between the two is that both have too many caricatures instead of characters. But while Confederacy won the Pulitzer, remains readable years after it was written, and at least made the caricatures funny and original, Baby in the Bag has the shelf-life of a carton of milk and the writing in it and on said carton are equally entertaining.

5Radically funny!!!  May 25, 2009

This is a radically funny book. The main character accidentally makes a politically incorrect statement while appearing on "The Tonight Show" inadvertantly insulting the dwarfs of the world who then ban together to ruin him so that they can gain further attention to their cause. The names and situations are extremely hilarious and the dialogue is very creative. Mr. Hanau nails Jon Stewart and his supporting cast in what is one of the funnier scenes in the book. However, the twin story lines of Detective Gun and Parc Atola are really interesting. The transitions back and forth left me definitely wanting to keep turning the pages. And the ending throws the reader for a real loop. I strongly recommend.
