Perception changing and touching book. Sep 05, 2009
By S. Collins I loved this book for a few reasons, but mainly because it's the type of book that can open your eyes and change your perception about an important issue while still being a really good story and easy to read. I admire Gena for addressing the topic of homelessness and love head on and showing each simple and complex side of the matter. The Barefoot Legend gives a voice to all the different perceptions of homelessness through its engaging and touching storyline, and in turn helps the reader to better understand and empathize with another's views and beliefs. Gena utilizes her gift of inspiring people to develop a passion for God, love, and a better understanding of other people in the way she developed each character and wove their stories together. It seemed that each character was created to be unique, yet very relatable, in order to give the reader a chance to learn and develop with the characters as the story progressed.
I Loved The Barefoot Legend! Nov 16, 2008
By M. Clint James Okay... This is a great book. It is a captivating story of two worlds colliding & the lives that are forever changed as a result. The characters in this book are very strong & well developed & I found myself battling mixed emotions with some as the story progressed. I watched as the characters grew & changed and at times I didn't like who they were. I didn't understand their decisions. It was because I myself was having to process & deal with the emotions they were facing. I was forced to think of what I should do with the same knowledge they were gaining. I have served homeless teens myself, so I am especially fond of this book & the kids in it. I believe that much in this book holds true to life. If we can get outside ourselves & step in to the life of someone else, as in this book, we might find that our worlds aren't so far apart.
I was brought into another world Nov 13, 2008
By G. L. George This was a really great read about finding God and learning about love in the midst of homeless teens! It reminded me a lot of my time as a student in Philly, because the story was both from the perspective of the homeless teens and from the perspective of a few college students wrestling with how to help the teens. In the end, both groups learn a lot from each other, but the college students learn the most! I was drawn to the story of these characters who came alive!
Gripping and real... Nov 11, 2008

Gripping and real, this touching first novel by Gena Minnix shows depth beyond her years. Based on her real life experiences with the homeless youth of Austin, Minnix makes us laugh, cry, and most of all care about this rag tag group of dissaffected teens who have formed a family more secure than their own. A shadow of things to come with homelessness rising to unknown proportions in our time, Minnix puts focus on the nameless faces and urges action from us all. I am hopeful this book will be a catalyst for serious change.
