An unexpected thriller vacation! Aug 18, 2009 The Beach House Mystery by Charles M. Bump is one of those books you just could not put down. As a former R.I.F. (Reading Is Fundamental) buyer for our community schools and having worked in our community school libraries from elementary through high school, I highly recommend this book. It reminds me of my all-time favorite mystery when I was a young teen, only much more fast-paced and more descriptive, which made the mystery seem like you truly were living it!
The setting is at a vacation rental cabin on an island in Maine. Cousins, Hank and Penny are headed off with their parents to what they perceive will be a normal laid-back vacation of sunny days and swimming in the ocean. Needless to say... and without giving away the story... this is definitely NOT the case! The story swiftly moves along and there is a sequence of mysterious discoveries and happenings on the island that no one could have predicted, least of all Hank and Penny (or their parents!) Hank and Penny stumble onto several mysterious places and strange neighboring vacationers that turn two innocent teens into incredible P.I.'s! The expressive style in which Charles M. Bump writes creates a feeling that you are right there living this thrilling vacation with the characters!
With the summer often dragging on for young adolescents of parents working outside the home, reading the Beach House Mystery truly is a "stay-at-home vacation" with a good punch of adrenaline that so many young teens love. Charles M. Bump has also instilled high moral values and a family life that all teens would love to be part of. I highly recommend this book and am delighted that realistic mysteries are still being written so that teens can identify with the possible mystery they too could stumble upon!
