Interesting read Feb 18, 2009 Reviewed by Carol Hoyer, PhD, for Reader Views (2/09)
Not being familiar with the beat generation, I had to do a little research prior to reading this book. However, I did find the author's journey and introspection quite interesting. In a time that we always follow the conventional rules, I was happy to know that there are those out there who are on different paths than what society thinks they should be.
Through part journaling and memoirs the author shows us how to find what we are looking for by being emotionally free from restrictions that society places on us and experiencing life by visiting sites and people we might have never thought to. The author does say that there is some "tongue and cheek" in his writing, but there is also a lot of information about seeing the world in a different perspective.
There are readings for 100 days; one of my favorite was day 83 talking about time. If you want to do something, why worry about time? Just do what you want when you want. So many keep holding back on what they really want to do because "the time isn't right." When will be the right time? When one is too old to enjoy?
"The Beat Handbook: 100 Days of Kerouactions" by Rick Dale is a book that you can't read quickly- you need to take it slowly, try to understand what you read and how it can apply to you. A journal is a great thing to start.

Book for ALL, Not Just Kerouac Fans! A MUST READ! Jan 02, 2009 I have read all that Kerouac has to offer and I can say that this book offers a Fantastic View into the lifestyle of the "Modern Beat."
Ever wonder What Kerouac would do Today if.............?
Rick Dale guides you through a fantastic maze of excerpts from 2 of Kerouacs' classic books, The Road and Dharma Bums. Rick offers up wonderful, and in some cases life changing, activities (or as Rick calls them "Kerouactivities")to participate in!
Take my advice, read the book once, take a few notes along the way, then on your second read do as many of the Kerouactivities you can!
You may find yourself doing something as fulfilling as making a list of places you need to visit, listing your life priorities, giving away your favorite material possession or doing something as fun and liberating as peeing in your backyard or eating a homemade piece of apple pie and ice cream at a great roadside diner you have never been to before!
This book is for everyone not just Kerouac Fans.
Buy this book, read it at least twice, do at least half of the Kerouactivities, and pass the book on to someone else to enjoy..Recycle this book, or do what I do and carry it with you in your new used canvas rucksack (read the book and you will know what I mean!)

A league of its own Nov 07, 2008 Having read a multitude of literature concerning the Beat Generation and its cultural impacts and implications, I can attest that this book is beyond description. While literary scholars, historians, and acquaintances of those directly involved in Jack & the boys' misadventures usually strive to recreate scenes that existed in the past, Dale applies the attitudes and actions of the Beats to the present. Witty, whimsical, and truly unique. Judging by this book's presentation, I imagine it was intended to be read randomly, without a mandatory chronology or sequential flow. However, once I picked it up, we (my girlfriend and I) read passages back and forth, not puting it down until we reached the back cover (and the bottom of a bottle of cabernet). Check it out; it's fun!

Great Book Nov 03, 2008 I believe this book to be relevant to all ages! I am a ways removed from the beat generation and I find this to be a great read. It is both fun and thought producing. Actions that can be taken in your everyday life that you may not have thought about!

A practical guide for living in a world filled with stuff Oct 28, 2008 The perfect companion for a road trip or life's journey. Rick Dale combines the many experiences of Kerouac with his own to imbue the reader with the true spirit of a "beat". No matter the conundrum, there is sure to be an entry that will address your quandary. A must read for anyone tired of living in a world fueled by stuff!
