I too grew up in a coal patch in sw PA, but there were so many different things that the author's memory of a coal patch and my memory's are. We never had any houses with picket fences,the houses were all dismal and dark from the coal dust, and dark shingles; and I don't remember anyone ever sleeping overnight at a slate (coal) dump, we gathered the coal during the day and went home. Also I never remembered any of my neighbors or classmates stealing and breaking things that did not belong to them. I would love to know the name of the town, but he says it no longer is there.
