The Compass Rose Feb 22, 2008 Bought for husband who is a fisherman. He found it interesting because of the local information but a bit tedious in spots.

Vivid and True to Life Jun 30, 2007 I live and work in Florence, Oregon where this novel is set. I have fished both commercially and for sport for many years and I found Brett's book to be a vivid and accurate portrayal of the life and hardships that commercial fishermen endure. The brushes with danger, the back-breaking toil and the heart-wrenching tragedy strike home and pierce the heart.
This is the kind of story that could only be written by someone who has been there. You don't see what really happens by watching from shore or from listening to sea stories at the Beachcomber. The story of Burke and his brothers is fully realized and the reader can understand and feel the contrasting personalities and emotions of the characters as they fight the elements to earn a living - and maybe more - if they get lucky.
Anyone with an interest in the sea and fishing or just an interest in how people interact with each other under stressful conditions should read this book. The ending was powerful and moving.
Enjoy.

Raw and poignant Jun 01, 2007 Yager takes us into a rough and raw world of survival and living on the edge...but this is also a story about coming of age, battling our demons and coming out on the other side.
Perhaps this is a story of family life. Burke's brother Jason is definitely good at what he does, his heart is in fishing and he goes from crewing to owning one of the biggest and most successful crabbing boats around. Burke, on the other hand, tries his hand at owning his own boat, and fails. He ends up working for his brother Jason, and his life could very well have stayed on that course, perennially working for Jason, following him along even on the hunting trips he abhors. But then he meets Shannon, and it's through her love and nurturing that he comes into his own.
The book is written by someone who is good at writing and remembers vividly what it was like to live in that rough world.
Good read.
