The Complete Guide to Stationary Gas Engines

The purpose of this book is to provide information on the history, design, function and manufacture of early internal combustion engines of the 19th century. The book covers all the basic systems of these 'flywheel' engines. Many of the puzzling components of the gas engine are thoroughly explained to the reader so that a general knowledge of their workings becomes clear. The chapters cover engine components in detail such as, magnetos, hot tube and sparkplug ignition, cooling systems, timing systems and different engine designs. The reader can also find useful collecting tips such as how to evaluate an engine before purchasing it and what a fair market price might be based on an engine's condition. The book explains how these engines were originally used in industry and on farms and businesses in America and the author shares his extensive research, cataloging over 3600 different engines and their manufacturers, dating from 1885 to 1940.

3Good Beginner's Guide  Mar 07, 2008
By TinkerMan
This is a basic guide appropriate for a beginner. There are a few more-detailed and comprehensive guides that will appeal to those beyond the "beginner" category however - but this guide is a good starting place. I don't know what the deal is with the astronomical price on this edition - opt for the more recent addition for around $19.

1Very disappointed in the product  Jun 15, 2010
By Lois Ready

We had borrowed this book (1996 publication date) through our inter-library loan and were very impressed with the clarity and detail of the pictures. When we could purchase a new copy through amazon.com we were very pleased--until the book arrived. The pictures in the "updated" copy are not clear and details are difficult to see. The price listings in the back area are not updated at all. The back cover has only one engine shown but inside the cover it states that there are two. All in all it seems to be a poorly done copy. If we had seen this copy before purchasing it we would have left it in the store. The service from amazon.com was excellent but this book is very disappointing.
