If you love Africa this is a great read! Jan 12, 2007
By Angela M. Silagy My mother grew up in Kenya so this book was a must for me to read. Elizabeth McDougall captures the essence of life in Kenya during that time period perfectly. The story unfolds deliciously and I couldn't put the book down. I highly recommend this book.

I can't as I wrote the book - but anyone reading my review of Vera Lynn might also enjoy it.

Memories of Kenya Oct 12, 2006
By P. F. V. Slattery Elizabeth McDougall's first Novel, "The Cracks in the Pavement" brought back nostalgic memories of my Wife's upbringing in Kenya. She was a contemporary of Elizabeth, albeit three years older. I now quote my Wife, Joyce..
"Our paths did cross , as Nairobi was very much a closed community.I was able to identify situations and re live some of the experiences that Elizabeth describes. The story bowls along and leaves the reader ever waiting to see what is on the next page. It is a well told tale of a time which brought such upheaval to so many lives. I enjoyed it immensely and recommend it to anyone who knew Kenya in the 1940s and 50s".

A very enjoyable read Aug 16, 2006
By E. M. Sawers Cracks in the Pavement is a gripping and fast moving story, full of local colour, which starts in pre-World War II Kenya and takes you through the war years and the Mau Mau uprising. You quickly become deeply involved in the lives of the well-drawn characters and find it hard to put the book down.

Like a terrific BBC mini series! Aug 15, 2006
By twalker This book is rich in personalities, written on a fascinating canvas. The history is like an angry beast lurking in the background. The sense of place and life are vivid. Cracks in the Pavement gives you a rich panorama of Kenyan life from several perspectives, the emotional arc is profound, and the story feels both true and revealing. It is written with a deep and forgiving understanding of humanity.
