Helping Project Managers become Effective Project Leaders Nov 09, 2009
By MaryEv Betterly The Cure for the Common Project is a useful approach to help make any Project Manager a success. I have worked as a Project Manager for large companies, in a consultant role, and for a start-up and found this book to be relevant and applicable to all of these roles. The 5 Core Themes of leadership are valuable every day and especially during challenging project situations. If all projects were run using the themes outlined in this book, the workplace would be a much more positive place for all employees.

You don't have to be a project manager to appreciate this book. Nov 05, 2009
By Debra S. While I have served in various leadership roles, I would not consider myself a project manager. That is why I have been surprised at the relevance of this book to my work, and the impact that it has already had on my practice. The Cure for the Common Project left me feeling empowered to be the most effective leader that I can be. It provided themes that I find relevant to a wide range of day-to-day interactions with colleagues and other stakeholders. It is refreshing that the book is true to its foundational principal of integrity, and I appreciate the clarity it provides by looking at each step of project management through that lens. I plan to pass this book along to family, friends, and colleagues with direct experience in project management, and as well to others whom I consider gifted and courageous leaders.

Great for all managers Feb 24, 2011
By Jonathan Kajeckas "The most common factor that all projects share is that things go wrong." Rick Valerga shares this startling insight early in the book, showing at once the seriousness of the challenge in managing projects well, and the candor that runs through the book.
Through examples and explanation, Valerga shows a crucial skill: how to think like an executive to make decisions that lead a project to success.
Information abounds on the tools and methods of project management; this book fills a critical gap by addressing not just how to manage, but how to lead.
I recommend this book for any manager who wants to take the next jump up in performance.

A Real Leadership Book for Project Managers Aug 01, 2011
By Hip Mama The Cure for the Common Project is a valuable read for project leaders at all stages of their careers. Rick Valerga's framework starts with a foundation of integrity and builds on Five Core Themes that take a project leader far beyond process and methodology, into the realm of true leadership. The concepts are made even more embraceable by the author's use of real-life situations and how to apply these principles in a concrete, tactical way to address the inevitable problems that happen in any large initiative.
Make no mistake; while this book is targeted at project managers, it transcends the typical Work Breakdown Structures and Gantt charts to a level of executive leadership. Valerga's Five Core Themes form the foundation of integrity-based leadership and translate well to any situation where one is responsible for guiding a group toward a common goal.
For those not familiar with some of the standard tools and methodology terms, the book has an excellent appendix which provides succint definitions and introductions to these concepts.
Valerga's writing style is casual and enjoyable, and the book is a quick read with immediate applicability. I highly recommend this to all project leaders who are ready to take their careers to the next level.

Easy Read-Fast Results Mar 01, 2011
By CynthiaS
Not just for techies. Easy read fast results. Highly recommend this book for anyone starting a project, managing people or trying to hone your own management skills. There is a big difference in managing a project vs. leading a project and knowing the difference can mean success or failure. Recommending to my team and our clients.
