5A wonderful story for youngsters about the importance of God and prayer  Mar 20, 2007
The Dangerous Journey of Sawyer Mouse is a really cute and wholesome little book that will delight parents as well as children with its adventurous story and uncommonly warm, colorful illustrations. It will especially appeal to Christian parents with its emphasis on prayer and trust in God.

Sawyer Mouse doesn't embark on this dangerous journey on purpose. One minute he's curled up asleep in a coat pocket, and the next thing he knows he is on his way out to parts unknown. Soon thereafter, he's running for his life from a bunch of crazed people, ending up completely lost, alone, and afraid. Fortunately, he happens to come across a wise old mouse named Solomon, who says he will help Sawyer find his way home somehow. The first thing to do, he says, is to pray, and so he shows Sawyer how to ask for God's help in finding direction and to seek His protection over the course of the difficult journey ahead. Sawyer faces some frightening obstacles during his dangerous journey back home, but prayer helps him deal with even his greatest fears. He also makes some new friends along the way, from Zoom-Zoom the carrier pigeon to a church family of mice who welcome him with open arms. He even gets to hear the story of Jesus' birth first-hand.

Harry A. Adams' story makes for a wonderful introduction to God and prayer for young children - and Emily Zeleski's illustrations (apparently some sort of layered or patchwork illustrations possessing a depth far beyond that of simple drawings) exude a real warmth that contributes greatly to the overall reading experience. Sawyer's story shows kids how God will be there to protect them during the scariest of times, and it also shows them that prayer is not an instantaneous, easy shortcut for getting anything they want. Sawyer Mouse faces several frightening moments during his journey home, real tests of his newly found faith in God's protection. And guess what? God is there for him every step of the way.
