The Deadfall Project

Iranian terrorists plant a bomb in Paris, nearly killing millions, and one man must track them down before they strike again. CIA agent Grey Stark is back from two decades of retirement, searching for an elusive bomb that could level a city in seconds. As NATO amasses troops at Iran's border, Stark races across France with his ex-wife, digging through his own dark past in a desperate attempt to defuse the war. Hunted by a world-class gunman, a playboy terrorist, and half the world's intelligence agencies, he realizes that even his own boss will stop at nothing to protect the secrets of The Deadfall Project...

5Thriller with many fun twists and and hard boiled characters  Sep 18, 2009
By Red Smarty
If you like your characters gruff and your plot twisty, then you'll like this book. The main character is not your typical hero -- he'd probably rather be having a stiff drink than trying to catch the bad guys, but that just makes him all the more charming by the end. This is a thriller for the discerning reader; the plot points are not telegraphed a mile away (I'm looking at you, Dan Brown) and the pacing is well done -- it picks up speed as you go along and the plot and the characters are appealing.

I'd recommend this book for your next plane ride or poolside afternoon escape. It's a bit like Michael Crichton meets Frederick Forsyth. James has written a thriller that's miles above the rest and will definitely hook you in and keep you reading.

5Espionage for the Thinking Man  Dec 08, 2009
By Word
Brett James has crafted both a realistic depiction of how intelligence agencies actually operate, and an insightful look at the characters involved. It's truly a page-turner -- not because every scene is packed with car chases and explosions, but because you're emotionally invested in these fascinating, dimensional characters and what happens to them. His good guys aren't perfect paradigms of justice, and neither are his bad guys cardboard cut-outs of generic, hand-wringing evil. Instead, within this book you'll find clever, intriguing, determined people just trying to do their jobs as best they can while not getting discovered or killed. And his vivid depictions of some of the less sexy parts of Europe is refreshing and adds excellent realism, since unlike what TV and movies would have us believe, not everything occurs right under the Eiffel Tower or on the ski slopes of Gstaad. An entertaining, well-done first novel!

5Which movie studio will make it first?  Oct 10, 2009
By Mark Rawling "Computer wrangler"
"Deadfall" is a brilliant story which needs to be made into a movie! Now! Pretend you're a casting director as you read this one - oodles of fun! It's original, topical, beautifully paced, quirky, riveting, smile-inducing and immensely pleasing. James is a master of one-line descriptive phrases that add so much to the story without weighing it down. Highly recommended.

5A wonderful joyride  Sep 30, 2009
By nicholas sher
Wow. What's not good to say about this author's first endeavor? I thoroughly enjoyed this book, though it was much to my girlfriend's disapproval as I chose to not put it down on one too many occasions. Thankfully for my relationship, even though 400 pages, it's a quick read. As for the characters and the story, this is not your usual, infallible, everything goes as planned, hero wins every fight scene, Bourne Identity kind of book (though fans and followers of Mr. Ludlum and the Bourne movie series will not be disappointed). There are plenty of plot twists, the action is stellar and the locations are wonderfully brought to life (the author must have lived in France). So without much further adieu, go out and by this book. You will neither regret the money nor the time spent. Hopefully there will be more to come, perhaps even a celluloid translation? (And by the by, books I've read reccently and enjoyed: The Girl Who Played With Fire, The Goneaway World, Dead Before Dying, The Book Thief, The Raw Shark Texts, Six Bad Things and so on and so forth. The Deadfall Project will now slip happily amongst its other bookish neighbours).

By STACY ESCH "Stacy Esch"
Really enjoyed this! It grabbed me from the opening scene and kept me turning pages till the end. You know you've got a great book when you can't put it down. The action and the characters are so vivid, reading it is like screening a movie in your mind. Great stuff, a real thriller!
