The Earth Mosaic

After her mentor is killed in a suicide bombing in Jerusalem, Samantha Driggs, a New York Times science editor, embarks on an odyssey to Thailand to capture the scientific story he had begun to write. What Samantha discovers is much more complicated and critical to the Earth's future than a simple science story for a newspaper. She finds herself at the nucleus of our time-and recognizes her role in the reconciliation of our society. Unfortunately, the role she discovers for herself is not a shared vision-quickly learning that there are forces in the world that are not ready for her calling as a scientific oracle. An unlikely conspiracy is revealed to Samantha and her companions-placing their lives in danger and putting our world on notice.

4"The Matrix - Unloaded"  Jul 31, 2007
The Earth Mosaic has a similar premise as the Matrix series with multiple layers of human reality existing simultaneously, but lacks the sci-fi / high-tech weaponry and Keanu Reeves (which may be a positive for some folks)... Instead, the author takes shots at almost every political and social concern facing our world today. Mr. Hiatt addresses issues ranging from middle-east turmoil, terrorism and UN struggles to redneck, illiterate southerners and metro-sexual yankees. The plot was somewhat slow in developing, but the latter stages of the book made it worth the wait. Some of the story line was cluttered with diatribes on social, political and religious elements (or perhaps vice versa?). It is amazing the knowledge (and opinions) the author has on so many topics - which sometimes made it difficult for the lay-person to follow. The Earth Mosaic is a very interesting book, and with all of the issues confronted there is plenty of room for more... Forget the movie, where's the sequel?

5An engaging read, forcing you to think  Jul 19, 2007
As you can tell from my moniker, I am either the author himself or the author's brother. I happen to be the latter.

I have to say that I am quite impressed at this exciting and adventurous novel. Not only impressed that my brother can actually write in complete sentences, but that he actually takes on and masterfully handles some large scientific, political, and spiritual topics that are pertinent to our time. The main theme being the future, monumental event melding science and religion together. A discovery so large that Mankind is forever changed. I loved the way he used a messenger from the future to guide the reader into a higher level of thought, challenging our current paradigms. The book flat out makes you think of science, the Mid East conflict, the United Nations, religion, absolute truth versus relative truth, global warming, "time" travel, etc., etc. All of this is interwoven into a suspenseful, present-day action story that keeps you flipping the pages.

This book is definitely worth taking the time to read. It forces you to think intelligently about issues and their possible solutions. For a first time author, it goes above and beyond what you'd think. A definite read!

Personally, I can't wait for the movie. Excellent work Mike.

3Nice effort from a new Author  Jul 09, 2007
For a first time author, this is a nice effort. Though it's an engaging story, it does ramble a bit. Hiatt manages to cover just about every controversial topic out there; stem cell research, Arab Israeli conflict, global warming it's all in there. Overall this is good read with enough twists and turns to keep you interested. I'm looking forward to his next book.
