"There is love in this book" Aug 13, 2009
By J. P. Godsey
"J. P 'Gus' Godsey"
Harvy Sheldon has an obvious love for music, comedy, show and style that literally jumps off of the pages. His insight's into stars like Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, Vaughn Monroe, Mel Torme and nearly 200 others is mind boggling. He made me smile ear to ear when he included my favorites "Dino" and The Mills Brothers...man could they swing.
When I read about the author I soon relalized the years he spent as leader of his own bandstand and meeting many of these "musical legends" personally, gave him an in-depth grasp of the artists lives and what they were about. That is what makes these stories not just the some old tabloid gossip... they are more...they sparkle!
I would like to have seen the names alphabetized for easier reference, but that is a selfish observation. My family and friends keep this on the table during an evening of fun to settle many trivia questions about the stars we all love.
Thanks Harvey, you brought it all together, in one book, a true "encyclopedia" of magical people from a magical time.

He does it again. Jun 24, 2009
By Richard Grudens There is more information about the performers, singers, Broadway people in every aspect of show business in this book than 10 other books you could find. It is an endless list of profiles of all our great American musical performers.Stories are also included about such almost forgotten shows like Your Hit Parade, the history of such subjects as the origin of Jukeboxes, Tin Pan Alley, the Disc Jockies from William B. back to the great Martin Block of WNEW in New York. Here you will find vignettes of Eddie Cantor, Al Jolson,Ethel Merman, Fanny Brice, and Judy Garland to Billie Holiday and the Mills Brothers. They are all here. No kidding. Over eight hundred pages of great stories and listings, a true History book of Broadway Music, popular singers of the last 50 years and even takes on the arrangers and the importance of their craft. You will never run out of names in this very wonderful enclyclopedia. Richard Grudens, a true Sheldon fan.

HISTORY OF AMERICAN POP SINGERS Jun 24, 2009
By Vivian Sheldon
"HARVEY SHELDON"
Harvey Sheldon tells of the world of showbiz, including Jazz, Pop, Rock "N" Roll, Hollywood and Broadway is unmerciful. How easy it is to forget the music and entertainment giants and pioneers of yesteryears! Time erases the glory, the memory, and accomplishments of past stars and legends.
The musical heritage and treasures of America will dissipate for ever, unless, conscientious historians bother to record memorable events from the history of entertainment, the ups and downs in the careers of stars of the era, and above all, the meaningful contributions of pioneers to the world of music. This is the duty of responsible historians, as Harvey Sheldon has written ENCYCLOPEDIA OF HISTORY of BROADWAY- HOLLYWOOD - SWING and POP SINGERS.
Fortunately, now and then, few books on the subject surface on the landscape of "intelligent" publishing shedding lights on our magnificent singers, , and most cherished musical treasures, lost or forgotten for lack of scholarly research or because of changes in musical taste and preference of a generation that lost interest in the music of the golden years of Broadway, Hollywood , New Orleans and Vaudeville. However Harvey Sheldon enlightens his readers in this book.
It is impossible to cover, in a review, the wealth of information that fill my book. You can spend weeks reading it, and I suspect many people will keep it by their bed side for months. If you have the slightest interest in the subject, you owe it to yourself to read this book, which I think is the best of any book you will find, thus far. "of the very best Singers, Albums and Entertainment Personalities of the 20th and 21st Centuries" is without any hesitation one of the best books ever published on Broadway, Hollywood, Pop, and Jazz, world showbiz, cabaret and beloved stars who entertained us for generations. This book is a must read book.
