5This guide will save you a lot of money and time!  Jan 23, 2010
By Timothy D. Stave

So you came up with an amazing idea, but you are wondering what to do next. Chances are you have questions like these:

* Can my idea make money?
* Is it really unique?
* How do I go about creating a patent?
* How can I get it licensed?
* What do I need to know so I don't have the word gullible written across my forehead?
* What do I do next?

Chances are a lot of people will either immediately write a company pitching their idea or hire a patent lawyer. Both are a tremendous mistake at this stage. One might get your idea stolen and the other might have you shelling out thousands of dollars for an idea that has already been patented.

What is the next step, then, on the path to getting your idea to market without betting your life savings? This guide will not only tell you the next step, but will guide you step by step through the entire process from evaluation to contacting a company (and even make it so you don't look like an idiot when you do!).

Readability, 5 out of 5
I was a little worried at first that this guide would be hard to read. After all, creating a patent is a rather technical subject. I was actually pleasantly surprised to find it exceedingly readable. Once I started reading, I couldn't stop (rare for me with a technical book). Blaise Pascal (yeah... the same guy who the Pascal Triangle is named after) once said that a good teacher is good because they unlock knowledge that was already inside of us. That is what I feel about this book. Would I have ever thought of all these steps? Probably not. Are they understandable? Definitely.

Usability, 5 out of 5
The author does not waste your time or money. He starts with the steps that can quickly help you evaluate you idea. Chances are, if you are natural inventor, you will create many ideas before you find the one that becomes big. The key to being a successful inventor is being able to critically sort through the good and bad ideas quickly so that you have time to find the great ones. In some ways, it is like panning for gold. That is where this book shines. It will teach you the fast way to do this and then will guide you through the entire process of patent writing and licensing after you actually come up with a marketable idea.

Value, 5 out of 5
This book has the potential to save a new inventor thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours. Eventually, you may want hire a lawyer to help with your claims, but when you do, following all the steps presented here will even make that step a lot cheaper. I heartily recommend picking it up.

5An Excellent Initial Investment for Your Patent  Feb 08, 2010
By R. Schwab
This book should also be called "The Essential Handbook for Inventors," since the material is easy to find quickly, the processes are well described, and the detail is extensive. The most effective use is what the author states: "It will facilitate your learning to keep a hardcopy next to you...", especially when you are writing your patent.

I really like the overall format such as the use of quick notes in the margin, for finding information at a glance, and having the detailed text adjacent to it. The claims and drawings sections revealed intricacies that I had always found confusing. There are also interesting trivia throughout that are fun to read, such as the history and reasons for the USPTO, and some facts on a few inventors.

The author definitely has acquired a wealth of knowledge surrounding patents and clearly explains what he has learned. It is so great to find someone that has gone through the patent process successfully and whom is both willing and able to teach others how to do the same. With this book, I believe I have made an excellent initial investment into my future patents. This will also make a wonderful gift to any inventor you know, whether friend or family.

5A very good book for inventors!  Feb 07, 2010
By Donnie
I have been thinking of an invention for many years but did not know how to go about applying for one without hiring the necessary costly experts to accomplish the patent process.

I ran across the book "THE ESSENTIAL INVENTOR'S GUIDE" on Amazon.
I was intrigued by the book title and decided to review it.

I found the book easy and interesting to read, as it really did "GUIDE" me through the process
to obtain a patent. The process was logical and ordered. The numerous examples were helpful to understand each section's content.

The writing is very clear and well written. I liked reading the guide.
The humor helped to lighten my reading of this very detailed document.

It appears to cover all the necessary steps and processes to obtain a patent.

A very well done book!

4A very good guide to Patents, a fair guide to Licensing, a bit of information on Evaluating inventions.  Apr 02, 2010
By Ron Johansson

I purchased this book primarily to see how he handled a "Step-by-step method to ... evaluate ... your invention". He discusses evaluating your invention in about 3 pages under the general heading of "To Patent or Not Patent?" Do not buy this book for invention evaluation information.

This book is primarily a step by step guide to write your own Utility Patent application (which I would not recommend). But, in going through the writing process, he does a very good job discussing what goes into every section of a patent application, what is important, and many pitfalls and traps you can fall into that will greatly limit the strength of a patent. This book could be a great guide in helping you better define your invention and broaden the scope before meeting with a Patent Attorney. It could also be a great guide when you proof your patent application.
He also spends about 40 pages on "Licensing Your Invention". I generally found the recommendations here to be sound.
If you want to know more about patents, and get some advice about how to license and invention, I would recommend this book.
(One caution, he states on page 20, that you can expect to earn 4-20% of the Retail Price if you license an invention. This is way - way too high. When he actually talks about licensing his numbers are much more realistic. So perhaps this is a typo).

I have 35+ years experience developing products for a Fortune 500 Company. I currently have 29 issued patents and 9 additional applications filed. Even with this background, the clear writing style in this book clarifed some things about patents for me.
