Without a doubt, this one is a future classic Feb 25, 2010 I just finished reading The Fox and I have to say...it was truly great. I bought The Fox for my wife as a Christmas present even though this is not the genre she usually reads. She usually prefers more current/real-life type stories. I also don't normally lean toward the historical romance tilt either, but after reading the glowing reviews and listening to the overwhelmingly positive comments from others that had read the novel, I decided to take a leap of faith. Now we are book readers in our house, I'm talking small library here, so if a work is good it will be read, but it was still a chance on my part.
I wrapped the book up and placed it beneath the tree. When she opened it, she said that she liked it, but I could see from her expression that the jury was still out. I wanted to read the book, but since it was her present, I decided to wait until she read it first. On a trip out of town, I was scouring the house for something to read while away and she offered up The Fox. I snagged the book and hit the road. I was not able to finish reading the novel until I returned several days later. I can now say that the jury is most definitely in and they have found Arlene Radasky guilty in the first degree of writing an absolutely fabulous novel.
I dare anyone to read this novel and not cry by the time you've reached the end, I'm not talking sniffles here but a straight out boo-hoo. The story pulls the reader into the novel's world from the beginning, almost without the reader's knowledge.
The book was really great. I never cry when reading a book, never. But this one got me. I thought that the story was a good one, but for me the real beauty of the book is the way the author brought the reader into Jahna and Louvern's world, their day to day life making what would normally be ordinary into something extraordinary. I must say that I feel very privileged to have read The Fox and am glad that Arlene is continuing writing. I think that writing such as this makes the world a better place.
History revealed. Nov 22, 2009 You can tell this author did a lot of research to make the atmosphere of the olden times super real. I like how the young girl really does seem innocent as and you can relate to her troubles. The clan structure is very technical and immerses you into her world very easily. The future world seems so natural, you think you are hearing a true-life story. Hard to tell it is a fiction at all. Seems to be a real life expose on a real archeology dig. Could this be a field manual for Celtic researchers? Great story. Thanks for an interesting read.
I really enjoyed this book Oct 21, 2009 I just finished this book and the ending was not at all what I was expecting! I couldn't put it down and ended up not getting anything else done this evening :) Is there such a category as a historical romance? That's what I would categorize this as. Very enjoyable, easy to read with a twist at the end that will catch you off guard (at least it did me) I highly recommend it..
Excellant Read Sep 25, 2009 Arlene Radasky's book, The Fox is a riveting tale that is a combination of ancient beliefs and customs and a modern day love story with the travails and triumphs of an archeologist searching for what turns out to be her own roots.
The author has done her research and it shows how life could have been for the Celtics and one of the bodies found in the bogs today could have well been the Druid that Arlene writes about who makes the supreme sacrifice to continue his own line. Lavern the Druid came from despair where his clan had been destroyed by the Romans and he traveled a long distance and got to the clan that Jahna belonged to. He believed that the fox gave him his art of healing and so they were sacred to him.
Jahna, the heroin is a strong, couragous mother who also makes a sacrifice to save her offspring. Jahna has had a strong family life that is about to come to an end becuse of the Roman invaders. Jahna was taught by her mother to be a weaver but she had also learned some about the art of healing with herbs. Lavern teaches her much more and together, they help many of her clan.
The writing in this book has a feel of poetry in the descriptions of the scenery and unique settings, there is an unforgetable love story and a heart wrenching agony, but an underlying hope of the continuation of family lines.
This book should definitly be made into a movie. It could be an epic with beautiful music and scenery with strong character acting.
A Wonderful Novel - A Must Read!!! Aug 20, 2009 The Fox is a riveting story about family, love and sacrifice. The way the author intertwines the modern story with the ancient story is captivating and entertaining throughout the entire novel.
From a historical standpoint, I learned a great deal about the fascinating lives of the Scottish druid clans. The author's storytelling and attention to detail made me believe I was living with the druids during the first century in one moment and then digging with the present time archeologist the next.
This novel is very difficult to put down and is wonderful storytelling at its best.
What an amazing first novel for Arlene Radasky! Bravo!!!
