The Great Singing Lakes: A North American Fairy Tale

At "nearly nine-going-on-ten", Jessie Martin lives in the heart of the Great Lakes. Seasonal activities on their mixed farm, at the one-room country school, and on the long walks between shape her reality. Her imagination is caught, however, by her mother's fairy tale of a little princess who climbs her castle's highest tower to listen for the music of encircling magical lakes. Jessie identifies with this princess. Substituting their windmill for the tower, she lives out her dream in the reality of the family farm of the thirties. Directed to the 9-12 age group, this story holds strong memories for many grandparents.

5A future Canadian classic!!!  Sep 04, 2005
By Kate
I originally picked up this book because of my personal relationship with Southern Ontario farming country. However, once I had started reading - I couldn't put it down! The writing was fabulous, the protagonist charming and imaginative, and Tutton, a former teacher, cleverly intertwined small lessons into her narrative. Not only was it an entertaining read, but I can now identify Ontario wildflowers! I would highly recommend this book to anyone, adults and children alike. It is especially poignant for Canadians whose parents and grandparents may have grown up in rural communities similar to Jessie's.
