Overcoming Obstacles Feb 08, 2008
By Nardsbaby
"Connoisseur of the written word™"
The pressure to be a boy ignited the disappointments that would plague Charlene `Charlie' Bourne's life. As a child she would learn the pain that keeping secrets cause. After her mother blesses her father with another daughter, four to be exact, he quickly heads for the hills. Mom, never to be outdone, finds the love of another man and soon is married. Charlie and her sisters will now be introduced to torture on an all new level.
No matter how Charlie tries to escape, survive, move forward and live life like a normal child, obstacles, hate and shame seem to keep seeping in. Will little Charlie learn to battle her demons or is she bound to fail?
While I was deeply moved by author Elaine Newkirk's debut `The House With Dirt Walls,' I hated that there was no editor or proofreader to assist her with this project. This is such a powerful story that would impact others and I would have to suggest that she seek out help with the next project in this series.
Elaine, I wish you the best of luck and encourage you to continue to motivate, encourage and help those afflicted.

"COCO's Love"
I couldn't put this book down. It is a heartwrenching read.
It should be used to help mentor young ladies and gentlemen. The experience of this family, is a story that needs to be told, to change lives!!!
I wait with anticipation for the next book in the series.
What a blessing!

The Dirty Secrets Aug 12, 2007

Charlie and her sisters grew up in Brooklyn, NY with her mother. Charlie had three other sisters - Sherry, Talia, and Tyeisha. All of Charlie's life she has been tormented in the most unthinkable ways and has experienced nothing but pain. She believes if she tells anyone about her deep darkest secrets - no one will believe her or disown her.
Charlie's father left her mother at a young age and her mother has blamed her all her life. Her mother gets re-married to a man named, Steven (the Devil). A tradegy occurs - with one of Charlie's sister and she is devasted. Charlies life falls down-hill from here - but will she take charge and survive or will she die tryin?
This was a very good book and I recommend this book to everyone to read. I'm looking forward to reading more books from Elaine NewKirk.

I would definitely recommend reading this book to everyone. I was drawn into the story as I read and felt connected to the main character, "Charlie" as if she was right there telling me her story in person. I felt even more of a connection because somewhere around we all may have met or even have a "Charlie" in our lives. It was overall a sad and heartfelt story but with a beautiful ending.
I loved the way the author used one word descriptions to describe what "Charlie" was thinking or feeling at a moment she was describing a happening in her life. I really love the way the author took us through the steps of Charlie's life to show how she finally found and got to know true "love" and happiness...found faith in GOD and a man. She also learned how to love herself and give love by giving of herself to others without letting her past get in the way. The author had a message to share and it was clear.
Thumbs Up Ms. Newkirk...Excellent Read!!!

It is literature that will make a difference Feb 08, 2011

"The House With Dirt Walls" is an emotional tear jerker by Author Elaine Newkirk. This vivid story about a girl named Charlie takes us on a horrific journey about the sexual abuse she suffered. This book, to me reads like a letter to a victim that says YES YOU CAN MAKE IT! Even from abuse. If you are a young person suffering with present or prior abuse, this book is a MUST read.
"The House With Dirt Walls" is a God send in my opinion. If more of our youth had the opportunity of read, hear and affirm what Elaine Newkirk has selflessly placed within the pages of this book, girls all around the world would become strong, resilient and willing to never allow abuse, past hurts and tragedy to shape who and what they have the ability to become in life.
I am proud to have this book on my shelf. This is truly literature that counts. It is literature that will make a difference.
