The IQ Parenting Handbook: by MENSA Member

An excellent parenting guide focusing on nurturing the child’s intellect, this book is indispensable for parents of children up to the age of 12. It begins with compelling arguments about the criticality of parental engagement in developing the child’s intellect. The analysis that follows reveals the various aspects of the intellectual processes and leads to an in-depth understanding of the processes of observation, memory, logical reasoning, and imagination. The book then goes on to suggest over 100 enjoyable game sets, online games and other tools that exercise, challenge and develop these processes. This book is a result of Jaina Mishra’s experience as founder of IQ Club that has conducted brain games workshops with over 2200 children of 20 nationalities since 2001. Jaina Mishra, a Mensa member and an MBA, has raised three gifted children, and has published a series of articles on parenting.

5Wisdom of lived experiences distilled in a few pages  Oct 28, 2008

Congratulations on an excellent first book. I was intrigued by the title of the book, so I bought and read it a few days ago. This is a short book that can be read in one sitting. The book presents a simple and concise model of understanding and developing mental faculties for kids using simple diagrams and flowcharts. The book very much flows from a cognitive view of the world, without however loading the text with technical jargon. I most liked the section about Creativity. I also liked the assertion (and defense) early on in the book that parents SHOULD be actively involved in kids' education. I played around with some of the elements in the resources section ... interesting games and mental exercises. I would have liked some cartoons, caricatures or other kinds of light-hearted humor to be added to enliven the book some more.
(full disclosure: The author's spouse is a longtime friend of mine).
