The Javelin of Saul: Serving in the Shadow of an Adversary

Jealousy. The person who is over you is envious of your potential. The modern-day ‘David’ is horrified to find himself at the receiving end of Saul’s deadly javelin. Human desire for ascendancy seeks to thwart divine design before it can be fully realized. The king leaves his throne to hunt the shepherd boy… Who has not felt it? The unexpected jab of a verbal weapon aimed at you with murderous intention by the nervous boss, the insecure colleague whose ‘seniority’ is threatened, or the ‘friend’ who turns on you. Jealousy is a fact of life. People come out swinging when their positions are threatened. Is it possible to serve with dignity when jealousy sits in the seat of power? Where does jealousy originate? Is any of this really about you, or is there something more sinister churning beneath the surface? Every leader, mentor or leader in training must be aware of the real battleground. Every person who serves under leadership must be prepared to encounter this challenge. It is crucial that we actively confront the forces that lurk, fomenting hate and creating division in order to serve a more deadly cause.

I purchased the book originally because the title entrigued me. I have always been able to gain insight for my spiritual life and professional life when I look at the relationship between David and Saul. But I must confess that I did not think that anyone could write a book on this subject with such depth and wisdom. Dr. Wilson hit the nail on the head with this book.

I am a minister and the church I attend just experienced a change in pastors. The pastor that married my wife and I, baptized me, and ordained me retired and his assistant became senior pastor. After 18 years of spiritual growth under the old leadership, my growth has completely stopped under the new leadership. When he told me of his changes and his new direction for the church and how I was to have a lesser role in leadership, it broke my heart. There is no pain like being hurt by a person that you didnt expect to hurt you, in a place where you never expected to get hurt, by a person who you never thought would hurt you, therefore the title "The Javelin of Saul" struck a cord in me. Many friends told me to just get over it, but it wasnt that easy. I love the church and I love God and I could not understand why this new pastor was attacking me verbally and attempting to discredit me behind my back. In my mind, I was no threat to him or his reole as pastor.

Reading this book has helped me to understand the dynamic and thoughts of an insecure person in leadership.

If you are going through a situation like this, I suggest that you remove yourself from the presence of the person and read this book to understand what is going on to you. David was no threat to Saul. Saul's disobediance to God lead to his death, not David.

To the author, thank you. I just ordered 2 more copies to give to 2 other ministers at the church. God bless.

Sensational!! Long over due! This book is my answer to many unanswered questions to the actions of myself and others. It's a must to read for all. It teaches the ways of identifying and overcoming the "Adversaries" of life.

Thanks you Paulette Adessa Wilson PH.D

May God continue to bless you in doing His work.
