Statesmen and Generals' words as witness to US history Nov 02, 2008
By Michael Burris There is no shortage of American history books--but there is nothing quite like "The Just Pride of Patriotism: Great Words..." Essentially one travels from Jamestown through the closing days of the Antebellum South amid the determination, the anger, the hopes, the dreams and the analytical talents of those Americans who actually ARE that history. It's an unusual vista--because historians or journalists are not explaining to the reader what Washington or Lincoln or Calhoun meant with their statements. Instead, the reader can reach her/his own conclusions. There is particular relevance for these words in this new century: issues of strong central government, the case for Federalism, the power of the Courts, the issue of monetary policy, the specter of war and the struggle with immigration. This is a great publication to keep by the fire--or augment the more traditional approaches to American history.
