An Epic Story - a Fantastic Adventure Mar 03, 2007 As an adult lover of fantasy, I became completely immersed in the world of Samar. With clean, solid, good writing, Hamilton weaves a complex fantasy in a society very similar to our own in terms of emotional relationships and historical social structure, yet with vastly different mystical powers at play. I found myself intensely curious about the Stravads, sympathetic to the Damans and humans and fearful of the robotic Gavistons and their evil master, Gava. The protagonist is crown prince Kaimeron who feels himself an alien with his own people and doesn't know why. A cataclysmic dream launches his hero's journey and Volume One is only the beginning. This novel is written for young adult to adult readers. It includes an extensive cast of characters that should keep the most voracious fantasy aficionados completely engaged.

Great Read! Feb 05, 2007 As a high school teacher, I am always looking for good books that will both engage my students and offer them something more. The Karhartadon Emerald combines an engaging hero's journey with strong male and female characters and a more sophisticated vocabulary than many fantasy books. M.L. Hamilton develops characters that seem like real people--and that the reader cares about--and then engages them in a storyline that has both classic elements and some unique twists and turns. I can't wait to get a copy of the next book in the series and to pass my copy of Volume One on to my students who love fantasy. It's too good to keep just for myself.

The Karhartadon Emerald Nov 05, 2006 This book is a trilogy, therefore the majority of this book was setting up the people, history, and the plot for what is to follow in the coming books. The author really made the people come to life, and I felt sorrow, pain, and joy right along with them. Whether these people were in the past, present, or future, their beliefs, way of life, and emotions transend all time. This book kept my interest all the way through, and I was very upset to come to the end and not have the next book ready to read.

A good Read Oct 28, 2006 This book is a great fantasy read. It pulls you into the story of another world where Kai, the prince of DiNolfol, tries to hide ever growing powers from his family and friends. It becomes increasingly harder for him to do that with the threat of invasion from Gava hovering over their lands and his desire to save his kingdom and all the kingdoms on their world. Kai feels if he can find the Karhartadon Emerald he would have the power to stop Gava from taking over the kingdoms.
We also get a glimpse of Gava and his cruelty to those he conquers, but especially to his son Cy. Gava abuses Cy more than his own subjects in the hope of breaking his will. Cy would rather kill his father than become like him, but realizing he's not strong enough for that, tries to escape at every opportunity.
Cy and Kai's paths and destinies eventually meet as each must grapple with their own magic powers, their love for one woman and their shared goal to destroy Gava.
The characters are believable, and even though it's a fantasy the situation of grappling with a coming war are very familiar.
