The Lamia Pog Feb 09, 2008
By Lorraine Mecca As much as this book replicates the elite boarding school, it also portrays life in Hawai'i in an intimate and accessible way. The young author is masterful at blending internal dialogue with conversation, and captures the lingo and thought patters of young woman and men very well. I'd recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Hawai'i, passionate about schooling, or seeking affirmation about the resilience and sophistication of today's youth. Adolescent readers will recognize themselves and the challenges the face on every page.

The Lamia Pog Feb 09, 2008
By Paul Y. Csige Reading "The Lamia Pog" was like finding your introverted grandson's diary and going from not having a clue as to what makes him tick, since you haven't exchanged more than two sentences with him all week, to being amazed about what's in his head and what's going on with him. It is an eloquent exposé of life as seen from a teenager's perspective and, of course, I'm not talking about the well adjusted, run of the mill adolescent who fits into traditional schooling but the teen-ager with the label ADD attached to his school record and not a clue about how he's going to make it through to graduation. Not only are Leif's reactions to every day life revealed but his struggles in dealing with contradictory and capricious school rules and the teachers who impose them. His interaction with the varied personalities of his peers makes for compelling reading. He weaves an account of life in that perplexing institution called boarding school - and his school is more peculiar and cruel than most! Particularly poignant is the notion that this kid loves his parents and knows that they are doing everything is their power to help him succeed. His struggle with what's dished out to him and the certain knowledge that this is his last chance is riveting.
This book is filled with insight into the life of a student with special needs. His story is well-crafted and deftly told and its conclusion is satisfying. We can only hope for a sequel which tells us what happens when Leif pursues his musical education in Hungary. I have a feeling that experience is waiting to leap out from the screen of his lap top and onto the printed page and will be just as entertaining.

Terrific read for anybody who grew up in Hawaii, went to boarding school or navigated or is navigating the stormy passage through adolescence. The author captures the angst of an adolescent.
The Lamia Pog Captivates! Feb 23, 2008
By Kathleen Istudor The nightmare that causes a dreamer to startle into wakefulness does not hold a candle to the disturbing journey of Lief Csuba in The Lamia Pog. The author Paul Csige masterfully creates a modern day novel in the vein of Catcher in the Rye as he explores the troubled psyche of his teenage protagonist as he undergoes a year of reform school in rural America.
Shipped over as a last-ditch effort at education, Lief arrives at the remote Lamia School. His hopes of finding a niche turns to uneasiness and anger as students are pitted against each other to gain position in the school hierarchy. When Leif becomes the target, his every action is measured and Leif begins to take destiny in his own hands.
As the story progresses the reader feels a strange uneasiness and sense of vertigo as life in the school challenges levels of acceptable discipline. Questionable school practices, regulations and punishments unfold as Lief's unstable character strengthens to a brittleness that promises to either harden or to splinter into an explosive violence.
Lamia Pog is a tantalizing read with an undercurrent that pulls the reader into multi-layers of awareness. It's a book that will keep you thinking about it long after you put it down.
