An innovative and good read Jun 10, 2009
By Midwest Book Review As science advances more and more, where does this leave faith? "The Last Pope: Egression" is a science fiction novel taking an interesting approach to science fiction - what will become of the Catholic Church? The protagonist is John XXIV, the 271st pope who has come to power in the twenty-second century, an era filled with human computers, time travel, and cyborg technology. Where does a man of faith have to stand in a world where science has become life? "The Last Pope" is an innovative and good read.

Thought provoking and a surprise! Jan 09, 2009
By SFB The Last Pope: Egression
Although, I don't usually read alot of science fiction, The Last Pope quickly engaged me in the characters' stories and challenges. It blended the technology of today with the spiritual and health possibilities of our near future. I can't wait to see what comes next!

By Tom Viola I think it is the mark of an excellent storyteller, who can begin a story anchored in pure science and end that story in pure fantasy. John Oster takes the reader on an incredible journey that bridges the science with the fantasy in such incremental steps that he makes the fantasy seem plausible. Buckle your seat belt and take this trek across the planets and asteroids inhabited by people, enhanced people, and uploads. You will enjoy the ride.
Far out setting (putting it mildly), fast pace, likeable characters Sep 28, 2009
By SH Don't be misled by the title. These characters spend more time hanging out in bars than ruminating on the finer points of theology, though a few manage both at the same time. Baby boomers may take exception to the boomers-as-galactic-scourge theme, but this novel has everything a boomer could wish for - action, romance, sex, and biotechnology as deus ex machina, not to mention exploding heads, not-so-divine retribution, and the space-surfing pope. The narrative takes deft temporal hops, lighting in the Middle Ages, the recent past, the near future, and an all-too-believable more distant future with surprisingly familiar characters, even one you thought had left the building!

Excellent! Dec 30, 2008
By Joe This book caught me off guard. I expected another sci-fi, but got a deep, wide, and rich cultural tome.
