The Lees of Menokin: An Early American Love Story

Francis Lightfoot Lee is known in the annals of Virginia history as one of the colony’s signers of the Declaration of Independence. Yet little is known of Lee’s personal life, a void which novelist and long-time Virginian Suzanne Hadfield Semsch set out to fill with extensive research and a healthy dose of creativity without distorting historical fact. The result is The Lees of Menokin, a biographical novel documenting Lee’s career as well as his courtship and marriage to Rebecca “Becky” Tayloe. A descendant of one of Virginia’s “first families,” Lee was a staunch patriot and reputed ladies’ man serving in the colony’s House of Burgesses when he fell in love with Becky, who was half his age. From the early days at Menokin, their plantation home, through the turbulence of the Revolution, to the lean post-war years, readers will enjoy a glimpse into this formative period of early America. The Lees of Menokin is an engaging love story set against the chaotic backdrop of revolution.

I have not read this book yet . I moved to NC from Charlottesville, Virginia.
Which is the home on Thomas Jefferson. I am adding it to my collection of
Jefferson related books.

I found this book well done. The inclusion of so much history and reconstruction of an imagined life from historical records makes this much more than simply a novel - I found it an interesting way to learn. The author's use of character perspective in a historical context let me better appreciate what it must have been like to be a part of forming our early Union - particularly the time the Lees spent in Philadelphia. I was left wanting to know what happened after the last chapter with the other characters. Interesting story on a man I'd never heard of but who was a legitimate figure in our history books. Recommend.

5AN EXCEPTIONAL WORK OF HISTORICAL FICTION  Jan 14, 2010
By E. J. Garst
No one educated in Virginia schools lacks historical information about the Lee families so when I began this book, I did not expect to discover anything new. Was I ever wrong! Francis Lightfoot Lee is known mostly for his signature on the Declaration of Independence but this author's historical research and intimate knowledge of the area created a book that I found hard to put down and even harder to part with as it came to a close. I found it especially interesting to read about how they coped with illnesses, the foods they ate, the relationships between families, slaves and masters and what travel was like in colonial days. This is a book that takes you behind the scenes of our country's birthplaces and brings personalities and events to life in a way that allows the reader to feel present and involved.

5A Marvelous, Historical Tale  Dec 22, 2009

A captivating love story vibrantly woven into America's pre-Revolutionary times.
Couldn't put it down and have come away with a far broader insight into Virginia's role leading up to The War of Independence.

5The Lees of Menokin  Nov 10, 2009

I attended a book signing at Menokin, the ancestral home of Francis and Becky Lee in Warsaw, Virginia. Great place to visit as a prelude to reading this book about a true American patriotic family. The author's love of her subject matter is quite apparent and makes for a nice read. This is a great book for anyone interested in our Country's heritage with a perfect dose of human nature thrown in. Would make a special Christmas gift for any history buff!
