AN EXCEPTIONAL WORK OF HISTORICAL FICTION Jan 14, 2010 No one educated in Virginia schools lacks historical information about the Lee families so when I began this book, I did not expect to discover anything new. Was I ever wrong! Francis Lightfoot Lee is known mostly for his signature on the Declaration of Independence but this author's historical research and intimate knowledge of the area created a book that I found hard to put down and even harder to part with as it came to a close. I found it especially interesting to read about how they coped with illnesses, the foods they ate, the relationships between families, slaves and masters and what travel was like in colonial days. This is a book that takes you behind the scenes of our country's birthplaces and brings personalities and events to life in a way that allows the reader to feel present and involved.
A Marvelous, Historical Tale Dec 22, 2009 A captivating love story vibrantly woven into America's pre-Revolutionary times.
Couldn't put it down and have come away with a far broader insight into Virginia's role leading up to The War of Independence.
The Lees of Menokin Nov 10, 2009 I attended a book signing at Menokin, the ancestral home of Francis and Becky Lee in Warsaw, Virginia. Great place to visit as a prelude to reading this book about a true American patriotic family. The author's love of her subject matter is quite apparent and makes for a nice read. This is a great book for anyone interested in our Country's heritage with a perfect dose of human nature thrown in. Would make a special Christmas gift for any history buff!
The Lees of Menokin Nov 03, 2009 I really enjoyed this book. I started it last weekend and finished it Friday night. It was hard to put down. It was a great combination of research of the life and times of the period and it was well blended with fiction (or was it?) to make the characters come alive. I recommend it to anyone who is interested in the history of the American revolution, especially to those with any interest in a good story about life in Virginia in the early days.
