Way Over Rated Nov 19, 2009 The first 180 pages you can just skip unless you enjoy 180 pages of questionable testimonies and just hype. The book is touted as bringing so many scientific sources together. Most, if not all the so-called scientific sources, are not based on real studies. Terms like empirical studies are thrown about. The so-called referenced studies are of the 'he said-she said brand.' Some of them border on the ridiculous, or incredulous. This book does almost nothing to explain the methodology of the raw diet. The book is mostly empty hype. I regret buying it. I wasted money, and would recommend looking at some more authoritative books. And, by the way, I am a raw food advocate.
The best out there for the raw foodist Nov 14, 2009 I have tried being a raw foodist three times. This time around is the third time and I wish I had this book the first time and I would have stuck with it then.
There are a lot of tips and tricks to eating the raw food way and let me tell you, when you tell ANYONE that's not a raw foodist that you are one, or you are going to eat that way... wow, the reactions will surprise you. (usually that you're crazy)
Ultimately, for your knowledge, and if you want to inform others just what good a raw food diet can do, this is THE book. Schenck has put EVERYTHING in here then backed it up with scientific documentation. I've never read a more informative book on the subject... ever. (and I've read about ten to fifteen books on raw diets).
Then there are pros and cons to this book.
Pros, just what I've listed up above. Anything and everything you wanted to know about raw food and why you should do this diet and what the government is doing to destroy our health and our food supply will astound you. Pasteurization is not your friend!
The con for this pro is that there is SO MUCH information that it can be overwhelming. I've had this book two months and I'm 3/4th of the way through it, (it's 600+ pages) it's not a quick or easy read, but it's worth it to take the time to do so.
The other sorta pro and sorta con is that she shows all the arguments for being a fruitarian or a frugivore, or a raw omnivore, etc. (even though it is pretty much universal that all the leaders in this subject agree on being a raw vegan). Schenck leaves the choice of what you want to be ultimately up to you, which can be frustrating.
Oddly enough, I haven't tried her recipe section, mostly because I'm not a fan of dulse, sea vegetables, cilantro, raw garlic, or raw buckwheat. There are plenty of other recipes, lots of smoothies and dressings which I know I will get to eventually.
The Most Comprehensive Guide on Raw Food! Nov 12, 2009 I am a complete beginner to the idea of raw food diets, so when I saw Susan
Schenck's book, I have to say I was certainly intrigued. Most books on the
subject are daunting and some are downright condescending -- as "if you don't do
it THIS way, you'll fail horribly". Live Food Factor, on the other hand, is
completely instructional with before and after photos, testimonials and menu
plans. Most books like this really pile on the hard sell toward "going raw",
and if you don't live in a modern, health-conscious area, it can seem difficult
to do.
Fortunately Susan understands that people from all backgrounds, locations and
lifestyles will be reading this book, and rather than pile on the hype, she has
dedicated her time to unearthing the science behind the "raw movement" as well
as its history. Knowing absolutely NOTHING about raw diets beforehand, I found
it absolutely fascinating -- I'll take real science over fluff and pitching
techniques any day and this book delivers!
The best part about this book is that you'd typically have to buy 4 or 5 raw
food diet books to get the sheer amount of information in this ONE guide! There
are diet plans, stories, scientific findings, results -- everything you could
ask for in one place. My favorite part was the recipes -- I used to think of raw
diets as nothing more than munching celery sticks, but the recipes sound soooo
good, I want to jump right in and try them!
If you're even the slightest bit interested in the idea of more complete, more
nutritional eating and you're ready to take that next step -- grab a copy of the
Live Food Factor - you will absolutely be glad you did.
