An explosion of blockbuster proportions! Aug 03, 2009
By William J. Key
"W J Key from Orange County, CA"
The enthralling, fast-moving plot of the book explodes on the stage of the City and County of Los Angeles, authentically described in exquisitely accurate word pictures as only a few writers have been able to paint. The action captures the excitement of the power centers of the huge city, the glamour of the movie stars' Malibu Colony and the exotic islands of the South Pacific few of us can imagine or will ever see. Based the author's firsthand knowledge of how LA works, this novel is contemporary, in the genre of Raymond Chandler.

Could put this one down! Aug 01, 2009
By Michael Brown
"Mike Brown"
This is one book once I started I couldn't put it down. It is a very easy read and the characters seem to jump out of the pages. There are not enough books with good endings, this definitely will make you feel good. Justice for the wrongly accused. Justice for those who little or no regard for others. Humor in unexpected places.
Good, But Not What I Was Expecting May 12, 2012
By Mike Brown Based on the book's description, I expected something like a fictional expose of corruption in local politics combined with a crime mystery. It really isn't that at all. It's pretty much just a crime mystery involving somebody who happened to be a former government employee and is now a lobbyist. There is very little about corruption. I loved the main character and the story was enjoyable. I just think it could have been better and less of the same-old same-old if it focused more on the corruption in the political system, as the description implied.
Can you give zero stars? Feb 22, 2012
By M.G. Wow, am I glad I only borrowed this from the Kindle library. It may be the most poorly written book I've ever read. I have to admit, I only read the first five pages, but that's 10 minutes of my life that I'll never get back.
Here's a little excerpt:
"Rivera had worked at the port for three years. At twenty-four, like others his age wanting instant gratification, this brief time seemed like an eternity to him. When asked, he usually admitted liking his job. Tonight he hated it. He'd had little sleep over the past twenty-four hours and was exhausted. The previous afternoon he and his wife had had a heated argument. Marta had accused him of drinking too much and wasting his paycheck. He had no rebuttal; what she said was true. He'd been paid a few days earlier and spent all but forty dollars and change, and the rent was due!"
Note the exclamation point; it's one of about a dozen used in the span of two pages.

3.5 - 4.0 stars Jan 21, 2012
By albertagirl I really wanted to give this book a 5-star review. I liked the main character in this story...a former policeman and now a lobbyist in Los Angelos. I found the story, although not exactly fast-moving, to be interesting and believable...up to a point. That "point" was reached in the last 10% or so, when credulity was stretched to the breaking point and led to a less than satisfying ending (-1 star.)
The story is heavily grounded in the politics of L.A. county; a political model that I'm not familiar with, and that confused me at first (-1/2 star.) But once I figured out who is where on the "food chain" I wasn't so distracted by that part of it anymore.
I think this book could have been better. I'm sure his next one will be. All that being said, this is a pretty good story; it's worth a look, I think.
