Merry Maines Jan 24, 2009
By S. Monroe Hawkeye, Bhu Fan, catnappers, and stolen cars are the ingredients of this story. It is quick paced and more believable in the realm of reality that cats do communicate and do plot and do unofficially own their humans. Hawkeye is brave and Bhu Fan is mysterious. Together with their friends they save the day. This book, while entertaining to the nth degree, will also give you alot of information about the workings of a cattery, showing a cat, and the personality of a particular breed of cat....the Maine Coon. The cats of MerryMaines are living in our reality, therefore the problems that arise for them are set in reality and I think this makes their story very interesting in the aspect of how they solve those problems. I loved this story and could not put it down. I was disappointed when I got to the last page because I was finished. I wanted the story to continue. If you enjoyed reading the Warrior Cats, you will also enjoy reading The MerryMaines: A Shaggy Cat Story.

Mainely Delightful ! Jan 28, 2009
By Kerry K. This book is a fun read for cat lovers and not just Maine Coon Cat lovers. The "odd man out" is an aristocratic Korat who gets dropped in the middle of a bunch of Maine Coons and proceeds to run away with the plot. And what is a Korat you might ask? This is really the royal cat of Siam; a small blue short haired crafy Oriental--and as the author says,"Orientals wrote the book on intrigue". It's a good read for a cold winter's night. And even better if you have a couple cats to curl up with.

Deborah - Book and Cat Lover to the Max!! Feb 21, 2009

While I wholeheartedly have enjoyed the Warrior Series - this book is more from the home and hearth. It touched me deep within my heart of hearts. I adore cats and have always felt that they are communicating. The Merry Maines - A Shaggy Cat Story - put the words out there for the cats and for the cat lovers as well. I deeply appreciated the cat knowledge as well as the sheer fun of the story. Bad guys, good guys, and that was just within the cattery! If you have a love of cats, books, mystery, fun, anything you will find it in this book. A sheer pleasure from the first page. I can't wait for the sequel to see what the gang has been up to! I give it 5 PAWS UP!!!! And so does my beloved Maine Coon Cat - Miss Widget!!

The Merry Maines: A Shaggy Cat Story
If you're a fan of such feline sleuths as Koko and Yum Yum, Midnight Louie, and Mrs. Murphy, you are going to love this book! Hawkeye, the huge polydactyl Maine Coon, is a Gurt Jan Ridd type--big and apparently rustic, but smart and clever after all as well as brave enough to rescue a half-drowned cat from a raging flood. Grand Champion Princess Bhu Fan is a Royal Korat and never lets anyone forget it--especially her "peasant" rescuer. This wily and feisty Oriental finds her new colleagues at the Merry Maines cattery may look like shaggy barn cats but can trace their ancestry to Viking cats and Marie Antoinette's Angoras. She intends to rule the roost, but life interferes, bringing the abduction of Merry Maine's prize stud, the near-arson of the cattery, and stolen cars hidden in a nearby barn which only the cats have discovered.
The writing is good (too bad I can't say the same for the proofreading) and the cats are well realized characters, especially the protagonists, Hawkeye's feral sire The Great One, his mother Madame du Maine, and the abducted Beowulf. The story climaxes at a cat show, where cattery owner Beth Merriman is lecturing on polydactylism: Beowulf is rescued and Bhu Fan's wicked former owner is foiled.
There is a lot of information about how a cattery is run (if you like the background info about the Jefferson Hunt in that series by Rita Mae Brown, you'll enjoy this) and about the history of the Korat and Maine Coon breeds. The most surprising fact to me was that polydactylism, now considered a fault (that's why Hawkeye is a neuter), was once part of the breed standard.
A sequel is announced at the end of the book. I hope with all my heart that this becomes a series,

Lots of fun, learned about Maine Mar 21, 2009

I don't read much for entertainment, but I devoured this book in just a few days. I love cats, I've always wanted to visit Maine, and now I wish this were not a fiction book! I want to go visit the Merry Maines cattery and meet these cool cats!
There was one section that dragged a little, when one of the cats is retelling some cat mythology/ancestral lineage. But all the rest of it is well-paced and fun to read. I learned a lot about the cat breeding industry, cat shows, and the beautiful state of Maine.
This is not a book for children. It is written at an adult reading level, and there are a LOT of references to the act of breeding.
