The Mevrouw Who Saved Manhattan: A Novel of New Amsterdam

When Mevrouw Jackie Lambert opens her New Amsterdam tavern in 1626, she jumps aboard a madcap ride through New York history. With a razor-sharp tongue and the tastiest beer on either side of the Atlantic, Jackie spurs the tiny Manhattan settlement toward a head-on collision with the tyrannical Dutchmen who rule it. Poison, blackmail, murder, all are fair game as she fends off threats to the family she yearned for growing up as an orphan. And when pegleg Peter Stuyvesant would rather destroy the town than surrender his honor, Jackie must take history into her own hands or lose everything she has spent a lifetime building. “A very authentic ring … like etchings of Everybodies by van Eyck.” – Charles Wendell, Ph.D., President of the New Netherland Institute.

5A very satisfying read  May 22, 2009
By Oenophelia
If you enjoy historical fiction and a good story told with a terrific sense of humor, then this book is for you. Bill Greer vividly creates the world of New Netherland, and I was most happy to spend time there. I thought the story-telling at the beginning of the book was first rate - from the beginning in Leiden to the early settlement in the new world to the early days in Manhattan - I was hooked, and I simply couldn't put the last half of the book down. Bill Greer creates a language, a rhythm and tempo, a style that rings true to the period for me. I have no idea what the Dutch settlers of New Netherland actually sounded like, but I totally embraced the way they sounded in the book.

Jackie (the Mevrouw) is a fabulous character. I'm always impressed by male writers who can write from a female character's point of view believably. Peter Stuyvesant is an intriguing historical figure, and Greer does a marvelous job of fleshing him out as a character in the book. He and Jackie are great foils for each other.

For those of you who appreciate the art of making beer, the book will hold an additional pleasure. Maybe one of you can tell me what the special ingredient in Raving Rita's Rare Red might be.

5Great book!  May 10, 2009
By Sascha Harper
This book, even though it's fiction, paints a very acurate picture of how things went in those days. I'm -kinda- interested in the Dutch history of New York, so I have read countless of other books about it; so what I'm trying to say is that this book is a definite keeper and a must-have addition to any New Amsterdam-library.

4The brew is good but has too many components!  Apr 15, 2010

The Book starts out very well capturing your attention and ends well too, but the middle is a little drag with too many characters. It is a good book overall and brings the period alive for you to feel.

5I could not put the book down  Mar 14, 2009
By T. Berry
An historical tale that kept me glued to the pages. The Mevrouw Jackie was hilarious and I could not wait to see what she would pull next to keep the early New Amsterdam leaders in line. I enjoyed learning more about early New York ... and was captivated with "learning" through such engaging characters.

5A Dutch Treat  Feb 21, 2009
By M. Ellis
I was pleasantly surprised at how well this book brings New Amsterdam alive. Jackie (the Mevrouw) is a great character and the Dutch are really exposed. It's a good read to bring history to life.
