The Night Visitor

Alton R. Barnes, Sr., grew up in Alabama on a dairy farm. He entered the service during WWII and served in the Pacific. Returning home, he entered Jacksonville State University and attained a BS Degree in Education. He taught one year at the High School level. Called to active duty a second time during the Korean War, he served in Japan and on release went to work full time with the Alabama National Guard. He organized the Guar's first Officer Candidate program and commanded it for 20 years. He retired with the rank of Colonel while serving as Assistant Adjutant General of Alabama. For his work with Senior Citizens, he was elected to the Senior Citizens Hall of Fame in 1996 and received a Senior Achievement award in 1998.
