The Pandora Plague: A Posthumous Memoir of John H. Watson, M.D.

The theft of a pocket-watch and the appearance of a mysterious, locked strongbox bring famed magician Harry Houdini together with consulting detective, Sherlock Holmes, in a case that rocks Britain to its core. When the magician is blackmailed into besting the box’s lock, Holmes and Houdini expose a plot against the Crown itself. In the tradition of Nicholas Meyer's bestseller, "The 7% Solution," Lee Matthias recreates Arthur Conan Doyle's magnificent style and characters in "The Pandora Plague," a period feast, bursting with the raucous energy of a world throwing off the romanticism of the Victorian Age for the power and dangerous potential of science, new philosophies, and the machine. Sherlock Holmes is at his peak. The brash, young Houdini challenges all who stand in his way. And Watson, Holmes's chronicler and friend, returns us to a time when the gas was always lit, the Persian slipper always filled with shag, and the game was, once again, and at long last...afoot.

5great read!  Aug 07, 2009
By Laura Easey-Jones
It was hard to put this one down. I really enjoyed this book for two reasons; I am a big fan of Sherlock Holmes mysteries and I used to be a magician's assistant. This book has both worlds put together. I was very impressed with the accurate description of the magic that Houdini performs in this novel. Mathias not only did his homework on magic, he also has a knack for suspense and I can't wait to read his next one.

3For All Fans of Harry Houdini  Dec 28, 2011
By Ron Chicaferro
Well, the first two-thirds of the book is about Harry Houdini and his public appearances in London and throughout England. Although enjoyable to read it doesn't add much to the story-line. Eventually, in the last third of the book, you get to what the title implies - except, the plague, deadly as it is isn't really a plague. But, if you're interested in Harry Houdini you'll like this. Harry Houdini was a master magician and his shows are amazing to read about. Had the book been written about Houdini alone it would have been very informative. Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson seem to be almost a footnote until the last third of the book. Speaking of footnotes there are plenty at the end of each chapter. They are bothersome but informative and worth reading.
