5Very entertaining read...  Jan 27, 2007
By slrj "interested reviewer"
This book was given to me by a friend, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Sometimes I tire of a book and can't finish it, but this one kept me intrigued throughout. The underworld details, the European connections, and the actual landmarks helped keep me enthralled till the very end. I feel I know some of the characters in everyday life.
This is a very enjoyable read and a great beginning to a possible series.
Thanks to Allan Shiflet for all the research and imaginative story lines.

5Moral Dilemma of a Mafia Don  Jan 27, 2007
By Louis S. Ramagli
The story is well crafted. The main characters are very 3 dimensional. Mr. Shiflet sucessfully intertwines his story & characters with historical events & people in believable fashion much like in the popular "Forrest Gump" story. The reader can feel the main character Shifty's dilemma between his Christian upbringing from his mother and his mafia life. Mr. Shiflet expresses clearly the immigrant work ethic that was evident in the depression era and how it played out in the life of Shifty. I did not wish to stop reading even though I knew I should go to sleep. It kept me wanting to know what happened next much like in the "Harry Potter" stories. I highly recommend this book.

5The Mob underworld comes alive!  Dec 11, 2006
By Kathleen D. Koziol
This story is a great thrill ride through 3 generations of a mob family. From the first page, where Shifty's dad is gunned down in front of him, your attention is grabbed and you are taken away in this page-turner. But this powerful tale is not your same old Mafia Don story! Shifty Shuller grows up with personal morals and family values that greatly conflict with those of his money-making crime family. I loved the way the story evolved, with Shifty's constant struggle to juggle his early teachings in his faith, with what he has to do in his climb up the Mafia ladder to heroin smuggler. Author Allan Shiflet does a superb job of bringing you into the gritty underworld of New York, where events unfold to reveal his family's connection to Afghanistan and a simple plan to destroy terror mastermind bin Laden! The strong plot, highly imaginative character descriptions and bits of humor tucked away here and there all deliver a compelling and thought provoking book. You almost feel sorry for Shifty when decisions he makes as a young man become inescapable in his old age, as he becomes more and more entangled in illegal activities. I read this book in record time and highly recommend it to any book club or anyone who enjoys a great saga. The twist at the end sets up what, I'm guessing, will be a sequel soon.
