The Pocket Guide to Senior Housing: What they don't tell you and what you need to know

“The Pocket Guide to Senior Housing: “What they Don’t Tell You and What You Need to Know”, was written to help seniors and/or their families navigate their way through the process of selecting the best affordable housing for themselves or loved ones. It includes several pages of important questions to ask when touring, and is a step-by-step guide through the process, from the first call to the move in, and defines terms that are tossed around in the industry but unfamiliar to those outside the senior market. Small enough to fit in a purse or briefcase, the Pocket Guide includes several pages to keep track of the facilities you visit, and includes a list of resources to access both locally and nation-wide. User-friendly terms describe differences between Medicare and Medicaid, and the variety of housing options such as Continuing Care Retirement Communities, “stand-alones”, independent and residential care facilities. The Pocket Guide explores the costs of senior housing, level of care charges and where, and if, Long Term Care insurance applies. The services of Geriatric Care Management are explained, as well as suggesting the use of a realtor with a senior specialist certification. The Guide not only tells you what questions to ask when you tour a community, but why they should be asked and how you should react to the answers. There is a discussion on private referral services, and there are several checklists of questions for you to check off as you tour or make phone calls. As many of the rules and regulations, costs and care levels vary from state to state and between companies, the Guide tries to keep most discussions generic and there is a page of resources so that you can contact your city or state for details.

5Outstanding Resource for Senior Housing Options  Mar 07, 2009
By Diane Y. Moore
The author has done an excellent job at organizing information and checklists about Senior Housing. It is obvious that her years in the industry have made her a seasoned expert. The glossary of terms is especially helpful and this book is the kind of resource that can be used coast to coast no matter where one lives. I highly recommend this pocket guide to anyone faced with the overwhelming decision about the most appropriate housing for a loved one, a friend or for oneself. It is truly exceptional that this tool can be used in so many ways. Happy Reading and thank you Pamela Pierson for providing us with what we need to know.

5The Pocket Guide to Senior Housing  Mar 05, 2009
By senior citizen
Ironically, I had just ordered 2 copies of this book when a friend's relative was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. He exhibited aggressive behavior and could not be kept in the family home by his wife. Therefore, new living arrangements had to be made swiftly. This book guided them through contact with Medicaid for evalution for funding his care and then helped them make a selection of an appropriate home that would accept those funds from day one. This was important, since the family did not have long-term care insurance, and some placements require the family to privately finance the first 2 yrs. of care before accepting Medicaid payments. In short, a chaotic time was made less stressful by use of this book.

5Excelllent resource for facing this difficult decision.  Feb 18, 2009

This is one of the best books of its kind on the market. It provides excellent checklists and gives suggestions about what to look for when selecting senior housing for your loved ones or yourself. I highly recommend it and suggest that those in the medical community that deal with these issues not only read it but make it available to their clients.
