Take This Book Along on Your Next Flight May 04, 2007

Let's say you have a two hour flight scheduled soon. After making your way through security, you will have at least an hour before boarding. Add that to the two hours you'll be in the air, and you have a three hour time slot--something that's almost never available for busy people while they are grounded.
So what should you do: browse the concourse bookstore, leafing through People magazine and other periodicals before you buy a fluff book to aimlessly pass the time? I have a better suggestion--take The Portable 2,000 Percent Solution with you, plus a small notebook for the good ideas you'll want to jot down.
Longtime management experts Donald Mitchell and Carol Coles responded to their clients who praised the first version of The 2,000 Percent Solution, published in 1999, then asked the authors to produce a smaller version. Thus, the Portable rendition resulted.
"The book's fundamental premise," the authors explain, "is that no matter how successful you and your organization are, you and your organization are performing way below easily achievable potential."
Not surprisingly, they identify complacency as the arch rival of progress. Accordingly, "The purpose of this book is to shock you out of your complacency, to make you think, and to get you to act."
Because I direct communication seminars, I welcome the prominent role Mitchell and Coles give to the Socratic method--breaking through the barrier of tradition, probing beyond standard answers to questions, pushing, prodding, chiding, and challenging. Like Socrates, they continue to perform brain surgery until fresh, productive thoughts emerge.
As rapidly as the business scene changes, book updates like this one are practically mandatory. What author would be happy to have his or her bestseller using Adelphia, Enron, Tyco, and WorldCom as role models? That was justifiable years ago, but no longer. Revised books maintain, even enhance credibility.
Now, back to your next flight. I guarantee that if you take this book and a small notebook with you, at the end of three hours you will have jotted down the steps that will jet-propel your organization to a higher pedestal in your industry. In the words of Mitchell and Coles, you will "free yourself and your organization from mind-forged manacles."The Complete Communicator: Change Your Communication-change Your Life!

Noted authors Donald Mitchell and Carol Coles have again partnered to bring out a portable version of their acclaimed 2000 Percent Solution; this book is a condensed version of the original. The portable version has the stories and examples removed and just concentrates on delivering the 2000 Percent Solution to you in a handy little book.
The portable version delivers this information crisply and with little fuss; it allows the reader to get straight to the heart of the matter of establishing the successful steps to obtaining a 2000 Percent Solution. This handy version is also great for working groups and also to give to all team members involved in the procedures being examined to develop 2000 Percent Solutions.
I also found the portable version handy as a travelling companion and it packs well in slim carry-on luggage and doesn't weigh much, so you can put it in comfortably with your laptop. This version gives everybody the essential basic tools needed to develop ideas and subject the initial idea to the processes needed quickly and without having to riffle through a lot of pages to get to the next step.
At the end of the book, the authors also provide a variety of options for follow-up assistance in developing 2000 Percent Solutions in your organisation and extended help through a variety of means.
In summary, a well developed book and a logical extension of their previous acclaimed work. This version suits team members of working groups, people who travel frequently or the copy to keep handy at the office for ready-reference. One issue I found with the book was the binding does not allow it to lay flat without it constantly flopping closed when I am trying to write and I hope the authors will review this in time and follow up with perhaps a spiral-bound version for this reason! Stiffer covers to withstand the rigours of frequent travel are also a worthwhile future option.Well done, Donald Mitchell and Carol Coles!
