Step by step guide to building safety into an organization Mar 05, 2009
By Manuel
"Man Well"
This book begins with a 28 page section on organizational design. "What?", I can hear you say. Yes, this book is about how to weave safety into the very fabric of your business.
The author has been involved in greenfield site designs for over 12 years, so he is superbly experienced in this arena. The reader is walked through a journey: developing a vision for the site, recruiting the right kinds of people, having clear allocation of roles and responsibilities, designing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) which employees will follow and compliance with Government and Industry Codes. Some sections have a high level of detail. For instance, there are 30 pages devoted to the monitoring and review of safety performance. Audits, observations, inspections and investigations are all described - those being distinctly different methods of monitoring.
A big plus for this book is the Appendix which contains a thorough 16 page Gap Analysis checklist - a self-assessment tool which runs to nearly 500 questions. To a reader who has done safety before and been frustrated, this is a roadmap of the things you need to get right.
I understand that the book has also been translated into Chinese (also on Amazon I just noticed), so there must surely be immense appeal for a comprehensive safety management book which has identical English and Chinese editions.
Criticisms? I have two. Firstly, the book is 6" x 8½" which would be okay for a text-only book. However the author has included dozens of examples of flowcharts, SOPs and detailed Forms which are inappropriately small. Secondly, the reader can get absorbed in the high level of detail in each chapter. Accordingly, it would have been helpful if each chapter had a Conclusion distilling out the key points prior to the reader moving to the next chapter.
Footnote: if you are a pedant like me, there are layout inconsistencies which the editors haven't picked up.

It takes you through a series of steps from basic safety fundamentals to identifying desired people requirements, systems of work, compliance requirements and ongoing performance monitoring and review.
