The Prairie Journey

"Our story begins in a farm community..." is the simple introduction to a profound tale of courage, isolation, and hope. Author Richard Coon has created a tale of a community of pioneers whose spirit is kindled by the dream of a new and better life. Although the primary figure is a sad and motherless child, Little Louise, the heart of this story is Festus, the wagon master, and his horse, Nudge. Together, man and beast endeavor to reach Louise and move her gently into the light. Through continued communication with the other travelers - what Festus called "friendly gossip" - and the concept of stored-up comfort, the child learns to trust, grow, and develop of her own spirit of adventure. While The Prairie Journey is based on the author's belief that every child has a spirit of adventure that never goes away, there is another underlying message that shines through: If we give our children the capacity to comfort their anxieties and calm their fears, then they will have the emotional tools to grow into healthy and confident adults.
