The Confessions as a devotional aid...beautiful! Apr 23, 2007 Reverend P.J. Southam, an admitted "plain country preacher," has done a wonderful job in preparing this daily devotional which has a focus not only on Scripture but also on the Reformed Confessions espoused by the Presbyterian Church (USA) and other Reformed denominations.
Reverend Southam, who has previously compiled "A Scriptural Index to the Book of Confessions," has done an outstanding job in allowing the reader of this devotional to digest small nuggets of the "Book of Confessions" along side relevant supporting Scripture. If you are a lay person who has heard of the "Book of Confessions" but is totally unfamiliar with it, this is a wonderful book to introduce them to you. The daily devotions are designed to follow the Church calender and so are very relevant topically as the year moves along.
If you are a pastor flustered that your church elders and deacons can quote the "Book of Order" to you from memory, but has no idea what the "Book of Confessions" speak to, consider providing this book for your lay leaders. It could very well become an invaluable resource.
Each days reading takes approximately five to ten minutes to complete. Every day you will find a part of a confession; a piece of Scripture ; a paragraph showing the relevance of the two; and a prayer written by the author.
Many "enlightened" people make the mistake of believing that the ancient, historic Church has nothing to offer us today. By reading the confessions devotionally, a person will find that statement is completely out of line. There is much we can learn as 21st century Christians by reading the works of those who came before us. This book is a wonderful way for a person to introduce themselves to the wisdom and beauty of the past.
