The Rebirth of Rhin

The Rebirth of Rhin tells the story of a young man’s journey as he sets out into the world of Iora, after his parents die in a horrific fire. Rhin’s goal is vengeance at first, but he soon learns that his destiny is grander and nobler than retribution. He finds himself in the virtual center of a conflict spanning the ages between Gods and Demons. During his travels he encounters many strange creatures, some more friendly than others, as he becomes immersed in a dark secret involving Iora’s creator, the tyrannical God, Jiaïro. Powers push at him from all sides and soon he finds himself on a quest to destroy the God Jiaïro and free the world from violence and oppression. There are great battles and genocides, magic, spiritual weapons, militant Gods, disgraced angels and demons wreathed in green flame -- as Rhin embarks on a personal journey of self-discovery.

5This Book Rocks! An Ancient Future Adventure/Quest.  Feb 22, 2009
Once in a while, a book appears "out of nowhere" that amazes and delights.
This is that kind of book. I loved it!

I was immersed in a unique, expansive and amazing world reminiscent of "ancestors" both from ancient past and distant future. I met remarkable heroes and villians that appear to be both new and vibrant as well as timeless.

The author's intuition, wisdom and power of description appear fully formed. There are many passages beautifully evocative, forceful, subtle, delicate, profound.

The author calls us to our own inner hero in order to grow beyond revenge and find peace of mind. We begin with the need for retribution and end with the freedom from any necessity... simplicity, true happiness and peace of mind.

I hope you read and enjoy this wonderful book.

4a good read  Feb 20, 2009
The rebirth of Rihn is an epic tale of a young mans journey from the village of his childhood to the place of his destinies realization. I was enthralled with the authors work from start to finish. From the heroics of the hero, to the vilest of his enemies. This book is not for the feint of heart, the battles our depicted in great detail, and will paint a dark picture in your mind, leaving you either, craving for more. Or wishing you could run home to your mommy.
And I'm actually in high school right now, and the book saved me from many a boring 2nd period so if you like epic tales with things like giants named Kayre-Ost who rip stuff in half for fun, then you'll LOVE this book!

3An Action-packed Epic Fantasy Adventure Is Born  Feb 12, 2009
The Rebirth of Rhin is the debut novel by Julian Traas. It tells the story of a young man named Rhin who after suffering the brutal slaying of his parents, discovers that he is the one chosen by destiny to destroy the evil god Jiaïro who rules the world with an iron fist. There is sorcery, sword fighting, brawling, and questing aplenty in this book. In fact, if I have one complaint it is that anyone who reads this book is likely to suffer battle-fatigue. It seems to me that The Rebirth of Rhin is unnecessarily overburdened with too many battle scenes. And however clever they may be written, it is trying to get through them all.

With that said, this book is well-edited and the author has an excellent control of language. He can often move the reader with some of his writing such as when he occasionally slips into verse. One stand out aspect of this book is the way the author creatively invents his villains. The legion of deadly foes who stand in Rhin's way are not your standard variety of bad guys. There is no rehashing of orcs or vampires in this book, but rather godlike spirits and fearsome demons who wield formidable and awesome powers. There were times when I had to stop from reading to imagine what these villains would look like on the silver screen.

I am a little disappointed that Rhin and company spend so much time engaging in trivial episodes that don't seem to relate directly to the overall plot. Not a few times I had to force myself to read on because it seemed that for long stretches of the book nothing important really happened. This was quite surprising to me considering the author's fast paced-writing style. Another thing that diminished the power of this book was the all too brief manner in which Rhin vanquishes his foes, often leaving the reader confused. A little more description is required at key moments like these to help the reader better visualize the events that are happening on page.

There are also times when the heroes miraculously survive some danger without a convincing explanation about what has just occurred. Of course, many of these unanswered events are plot points intended to be revealed at some later point in the story which the story does for the most part. But the failure to explain within a timely fashion how Rhin survives most of the early threats against his life hurt the story because too many inexplicable events happened too quickly to allow the reader a chance to digest these events. If not for a few missteps, such as the ones I have mentioned, I would have given this book more stars.

The crowning moment of this book is when everything begins to come together and the many mysteries in the story are unraveled and the final battle builds to a crescendo. The final pages of this book are some of the most stirring and memorable scenes I have read in a fantasy book in a long time.

I would recommend that anyone who loves an action-packed fantasy tale of good versus evil pick himself up a copy of this book. Judging by the shocking conclusion to this book, the sequel should be something to look forward to. I, for one, am eager to continue this adventure and see how the next thrilling episode unfolds.
