A Must Read Jan 10, 2010 A long awaited and very necessary new book from Gene Garman who is one of the most respected First Amendment scholars in America. He writes about the law so that laymen can understand it - and goodness knows we need that in America. Sadly too many of our citizens can recite the Pledge of Allegiance but that can't recite the Bill of Rights. They know the Ten Commandments (some of them anyway) but they don't know America's First Commandment. This is essential reading for anyone who has any interest in informing themselves of the basic, bedrock of our Constitution. Garman demonstrates that these are not erudite legal issues but simple, easy to understand, concepts within the intellectual grasp of anyone with an IQ above 85. This is essential knowledge to even call yourself an American.
No person who enters today's acrimonious debates on these issues has any credibility unless they can first show they understand these basic rules. Garman should be required reading in every college in America. Read this book and I have no doubt you will know more about this area of law than 90% of our citizens.

Religion and Government Apr 19, 2009 Gene Garman's book does a masterful job of pointing out that the Founding Fathers were very careful to keep religion and government separate. His quotes from the Constitution and the writings of our founders are well-documented with copious endnotes. The framers of the Constitution were very aware of the complications that arose when religious bodies took political power. I agree--the religion commandments should be posted publicly.
