The Resourceful Miss Shivers: A Story About Friendship, Cooperation and Using Resources That You Already Have

Written and illustrated by Paula Veschore, The Resourceful Miss Shivers is an incredibly tender tale that shows children that cooperation and friendship are two of the finest points of life. A veritable feast for the eyes, the richly detailed images are matched only by the touching qualities of the characters, which include two alpacas, a flock of chickens, a flock of ducks, a dog, a turkey, a horse and two very opinionated crows. Miss Shivers is a plucky alpaca with an infectious charm and a big dream. She wants to knit a sweater to keep herself warm. They don’t call her Miss Shivers for nothing. The thing is, is that she knows she cannot do it on her own. So over lunch one day she devises a plan that will involve the entire barnyard in cooperation and fun. From chickens that peck sticks and seeds from an abandoned fleece, to a horse that helps create the knitting needles from an old pitchfork, readers will be amazed and amused with the resourcefulness of Miss Shivers.

5My Grandson Will Love It!  Nov 04, 2009
I told myself I was buying "Miss Shivers" for my 5 year old grandson. Actually, I bought it for the illustrations, which it turns out are created by the author. They are delightful, and tell a story all by themselves. On the second reading, imagining my little grandson nestled alongside me at bedtime, I read aloud. The narrative has a pleasant "read aloud" rhythm, and an important moral about the joy of love and community which I know he'll enjoy before drifting off to sleep. I will treasure this little book. Now I need to order another copy for my grandson.

5Delightful!  Dec 11, 2008
Miss Shivers is truly a delight. If you're a knitter, you'll appreciate it even more. Having no idea how cold she was going to be after her first shearing (and how my 3 year old granddaughter and I could relate to that lately in our recent cold weather!!!) She uses her terrific ingenuity and comes up with an idea to make a sweater out of some old fleece found in the barn. The illustrations of each of the barn animals that help her with her project are amazing. Each of their individual characteristics shine through the book. And, since I am a knitter myself, it makes it even that much more fun to read this to my granddaughter (having received hand-knitted sweaters from me). It is THE book to put your knitting down for some read-aloud time with your young ones.
