The Road to Tataouine

Toby, Luke and Sophie live and study in Los Angeles, California where each of their lives are shaped by the prevalent world of film. Movie culture to them surpasses the mere form of entertainment; it shapes their studies, dialogue, identity, and even their unconscious as the images and presence of film mold their daily thoughts and actions. At Sophie's behest, she encourages her boyfriend Toby to step away from his position as a mere spectator of other people's adventures in the movies to embark on one of his own, inspiring him to pick one place, any place for his first trip abroad. He chooses the location of his dreams- Tataouine, or Tatooine, the desert location he had seen portrayed countless times since childhood while watching his favorite films- the Star Wars trilogies. For Toby, his best friend Luke, and Sophie this idea of a getaway plants the seed for what will become the journey of a lifetime. On this trip, the destination becomes more than a place but a climax, a symbol for the pinnacle of a rite of passage that weds the age old myth of the inward journey and the lonely pilgrimage of self development we must all take with a modern context of identities shaped and influenced by the encompassing presence of the film medium.
