By Gary H. Stovall I discovered the author is also an artist who used her own painting of a wildflower when she designed the cover of her book. How appropriate, since the protagonist, Sable Jensen, is a true wildflower. For example,on page 89, in a scene where she has been kidnapped and held captive in a brothel: "No, Miss Sable. Here now, let me have the bottle 'fore Miss Monique oomes. "Holding the bottle under one arm and moving away from the girl, "My Mama was a angel. Never said a mean word about nobody." Beginning to cry, "My sister, Twila, just like her, so good and sweet. Loved you no matter what you did or said. I ever tell you that? Both of 'em angels." "No, Miss Sable. I never knowed they's angels." "My Pa weren't much far as I could tell. 'Course Mama and Twila never wanted me to know how bad he was, but I heard rumors. I'm bad like he was. You suppose he passed it on to me? I cannot ever remember a time I's ever good. You know that? Not one time in all my life."
From a fellow writer and artist: Powerful, a page turner! This lady paints a vivid, gripping scene with a few, short words. Look at the personification of the wind in her metaphor on page 12, "Silence rode home with them, along with the wind."
Great job, Phyllis. Looking forward to more of your work.
