A Beautiful Book May 26, 2005
By A. Webster

I received this book as a gift, and it is a beautiful story with wonderful illustrations. It's simple and sweet and reminds children about what's important in life. It's a true account about a young girl in the 50's, who takes a bus to go first to the local rummage sale (outside of Pittsburgh) and then to visit her cousin Patty. She buys all kinds of shiny trinkets and is dazzled by all the jewlery and such. On the bus ("the doodlebug" it was called there) she thinks about all the treasures she got and how they're going to have fun playing dress-up and such. But she accidentaly leaves it behind and the bus pulls away... She gets over it though, when she realizes that it's not possessions, but friendships and family that are the important things in life. The drawings are from the author's sister and are very old-fashioned and rustic renderings, and they fit the cute story perfectly. I reccomend this to any parent that wants to read their child a simple rhyming story with its heart in the right place.
