The Saga of Family Herz

In The Saga of Family Herz, W. W. Mulkey describes the rich and often tumultuous history of the land that became Russia. In this fascinating description he introduces the family Herz, using first the comprehensive and enlightening memoirs of Konrad Herz, and then the reminiscences of his daughters, Rosa and Melitta. From the early struggles of a German family living in Russia, through their desperate attempts to survive the atrocities of World War II, and finally to their joyful and successful lives in the United States, the reader learns about generosity, kindness, and proof that a family can withstand nearly any hardship, as long as it remains together, committed to doing what is right and honorable.

5Amazing Family  Jul 26, 2010
By Gregg Mortenson
I was enthralled with following this family from the time of the Tsars to life as everyday Americans. The challenges they faced (to say the least) truly provide insight to life in Russia that few here in the West could ever imagine. I found myself not wishing to put the book down so I could learn what the next day would hold for the family. This family more than many can truly appreciate what it means to be free.

5The Saga of Family Herz  Jun 30, 2009
By Glyndower of Seattle "Jean"
This is a fascinating and enlightening book. By telling the story of one family, and by focusing on this one family's history for several generations, the author deals with an aspect of world history and a population of people about which most of us have been unaware.

Through grim and astonishing descriptions of daily life, (offered in an uncomfortable, "business as usual" manner)this book provides a picture of the quiet, unassuming and unacknowledged courage and ingenuity which were demonstrated by those who were forced to live the nightmare, that was Stalin's Russia, and the war that followed. It is the unrelenting account of atrocious daily existence that provides reality in this book. What an eye opener!

5Wonderful historical perspective  Nov 03, 2008
By T. L. Tyler
A wonderful personal perspective of life told by an average person experiencing the ravages of Soviet era Russia and WWII. This is a story not known by many and proves to be a powerful read.
